The ESA Disease Ecology section will sponsor an outstanding student paper award and an outstanding student poster award this year. Instructions for outstanding student paper nominations are available here. All nomination materials should be sent to Dr. Meggan Craft (craft@umn.edu) on or before the deadline.

  1. Elections for Vice Chair

We are holding our section’s annual election for a new vice chair for 2018-2019. If you are interested in serving as vice chair, please email the current section chair, Dr. Meggan Craft (craft@umn.edu) by June 1, 2018 with a <500-word description of your qualifications and any other information that will be useful to voters. This information will appear on the ballot.

DUTIES OF THE VICE-CHAIR. The Vice-Chairperson shall serve as program officer and shall arrange the scientific program for the annual Section meetings. The Vice-Chairperson shall assume the duties of the Chairperson whenever that person is unable to act. The Vice-Chairperson serves for a 1-yr term, after which time the Vice-Chairperson will assume the office of Chairperson and serve in that capacity for one additional year. Following the term as Chairperson, there will be a one-year term as Past-Chairperson.

  1. Elections for Student Liaison

After three years of service (and attaining his PhD!), Dr. Dan Becker is handing off the torch as our section student liaison. If you are interested in serving in this capacity (or know someone who would be), please contact Dan (daniel.becker3@montana.edu). The person in this position contributes to many of the section activities, including organizing live tweeting of ESA disease talks and student-faculty meet-ups.
(This position does not have a 3-year term. Dan is just very generous.)

  1. ESA Disease Section t-shirts!!

You still have the opportunity to purchase an ESA Disease Ecology t-shirt! This is a fundraiser – 100% of the proceeds go toward student awards, better mixers, supporting future technical workshops at ESA, expanding networking opportunities at annual meetings, and other new initiatives.

There are 5 designs to choose from, and all orders will be shipped directly to you. A limited number may be available for purchase at the meeting in New Orleans, but designs/sizes will be limited.

  1. New Orleans, here we come!

Watch for details about the 2018 student/faculty meetups

Our annual mixer will be held this year at The Rusty Nail, approximately a 10 min walk from the conference center, on Wednesday (8 August) from 6:30-8pm. The food and drink on offer will be a big improvement from the convention center mixers, so be sure to join us early!

Please stop by and say hi to us at the Disease Ecology section booth at the meeting in August. This year, we’re planning some fun activities – take a quiz, win a prize! make your own pipe cleaner pathogen! – and we’ll have fabulous section stickers and t-shirts for sale.
