Live Webcasts during ESA Millennium Conference
The 1st ESA Millennium Conference, “Water-Ecosystem Services, Drought, and Environmental Justice”, will be held November 9-12, 2009, in Athens, Georgia. Attendance has been filled, but live webcasts and other web-based resources will be available to a broader audience. ESA Letters to President Obama and the US Senate
As climate legislation continues to simmer, ESA joined 17 other scientific societies in a letter to all Senators, reaffirming the reality of climate change and its link to human activities. ESA President Mary Power also added the Society’s voice to highlighting the importance of Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation (REDD) in a letter to President Obama. In another letter, Power called upon Obama to consider issuing an Executive Order to preserve and enhance the nation’s science collections. www.esa.org/pao/policy_positions.php#letters
Albuquerque 2009 draws Press
Twenty-two media registrants attended the ESA 2009 Annual Meeting and stories ran in Nature, Scientific American (www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=california-amphibians-need-a-lift), New Scientist, National Geographic News (news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2009/08/090812-killer-bugs-crops-pests.html), the Discovery Channel News and US News and World Report. The Albuquerque Journal, Boston Globe, and the Oregonian also published stories.
NEON Education Workshop
Eleven faculty members attended an all day workshop at the ESA Annual Meeting and preceding webinar on using continental scale datasets in undergraduate ecology courses. Participants were introduced to EcoTrends datasets: www.esa.org/education_diversity/neon/workshop/albuquerque
New Focus on Ecologists Website
The Focus on Ecologists website has been redesigned with a new look and updated information! Focus on Ecologists is an ongoing project that allows web visitors interested in ecological careers to browse a collection of biographical profiles highlighting the career paths and personal stories of selected ecologists. Profiled ecologists represent a diverse array of career paths, job sectors, and backgrounds. www.esa.org/ecologists/
2010 Certification Application Season Now Open
Updated application forms for ESA’s Professional Ecologist Certification program are now available on the certification website. Certification applications will now only be accepted electronically. Guidelines for application, requirements for levels of certification, and more information about the professional certification program can be found at www.esa.org/careers_certification/certification.php. The primary deadline for submissions is February 1st.
