The ESA Student Section is awarding travel grants for students to attend the 2008 annual meeting of the Ecological Society of America in Milwaukee. The grants will include 8 awards ($195 each) for students from within the US and 3 ($325 each) for students from outside the U.S. Grants will be awarded to graduate and undergraduate students presenting posters or oral presentations at the meeting.

THE DEADLINE FOR APPLICATIONS IS FRIDAY, MAY 2nd.

Eligibility: Awards will be granted only to Student Section members.  To become a student section member, check the appropriate box on your ESA membership form when you renew your ESA membership (http://eservices.esa.org) or email membership@esa.org.

Application: Applications and instructions can be found on the Student Section website (http://esa.org/students/section/) The application includes general information, an essay, and a statement of anticipated travel cost. Please email applications to both Jennifer Talbot (jtalbot@uci.edu) and Matthew Whiteside (mwhitesi@uci.edu) with the subject line, “ESA Student Travel Grants”. 

Post-award requirements: Student essays that result in financial support will be submitted to an ESA publication, the ESA blog, or the ESA Student Section website for other students to read and learn from. The Student Section may arrange a forum for all of the essays to be published.

Best Undergraduate Presentation Awards

The ESA Student Section will award two cash prizes for the best undergraduate student oral presentation and best undergraduate student poster presentation. Best undergraduate student oral and poster presentations will be awarded based criteria for the Buell and Braun awards. Awards for the 2008 recipients will be presented at the Student Section mixer at the 2009 annual meeting. 

Eligibility and application: A candidate for the award must be the sole or first author of the submitted abstract, and prepare and present himself an oral paper or poster at the ESA Annual Meeting. The candidate must be an undergraduate student or have completed their undergraduate degree not more than 9 months before the presentation. A student can apply several times in consecutive years as long as he or she meets the above qualifications and has not won the award before.  Applicants must fill out an application form and submit it electronically to Johanna Delgado-Acevedo (johannadelgado@yahoo.com), ESA Student Section Secretary, by May 15th

Outstanding Student Research in Ecology Awards

The Student Section of the Ecological Society of America is pleased to sponsor the first Outstanding Student Research in Ecology Awards.  These awards honor excellence in student research via an outstanding publication. One $150 cash prize will be granted in honor of research conducted by a graduate student, and one $150 cash prize will be granted to research conducted by an undergraduate student.

Eligibility and nomination: These awards will be given to students in recognition of an outstanding paper resulting from research done in a graduate or as undergraduate program.   At the time of the nomination deadline, the paper must be published and the nominee must be an undergraduate student, a graduate student, or have received their Ph.D. within two years.  The nominee must be first author of the paper if there is more than one author.  Nominated papers must be published in a peer-reviewed journal in any area of ecology.  The nominee also must be a member in good standing of ESA’s Student Section at the time of nomination.  Self-nominations and nominations by colleagues are welcomed.

Nomination packets should include:

  1. A copy of the paper
  2. A brief letter describing the impact of the paper on the field and stating the date of completion of the degree if the nominee is no longer a student
  3. A letter of support from the major professor that also confirms the nominee’s eligibility for the award
  4. A CV from the nominee

Nomination materials should be sent by May 15th to the Student Section's Secretary.  Applications can also be submitted electronically as pdfs.  Send files to the Secretary with the phrase “Outstanding Student Awards” on the subject line.

Selection criteria: Applications will be reviewed by an Awards Committee appointed by the Officers of the Student Section.  Candidates will be judged based upon the paper's contribution to the field, including its originality, study design, and impact.
