2007 Ecological Society of America Annual Meeting

The 2007 ESA Annual Meeting (held jointly with the Society for Ecological Restoration) will take place August 5-10 in San Jose, California with the theme "Ecology-based Restoration in a Changing World." For more information on the meeting, visit http://www.esa.org/sanjose.

SEEDS Program Travel Awards

The SEEDS Program offers travel awards for undergraduate students, program alumni in graduate school, and Campus Ecology Chapter faculty advisors to attend the Ecological Society of America (ESA) Annual Meeting. Travel awards defray expenses to attend the ESA Meeting including air travel, meals, lodging, and registration. Travel awards are funded through support of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and the National Science Foundation.

The ESA is the nation’s leading professional society of ecologists, representing over 9,000 scientists, researchers, policy-makers and managers from the United States and over 50 other nations. The ESA Annual Meeting draws more than 4,000 professionals from around the world to participate in scientific presentations, symposia, workshops, field trips, and a trade show. It provides an excellent venue to engage students and faculty in one of the most important facets of science – communicating ideas and new knowledge with the scientific community. SEEDS specific events at the Annual Meeting include an orientation meeting and dinner, a mixer, and a breakfast for participants and mentors. Other highlighted events include a diversity luncheon and student events such as section meetings and mixers. The meeting experience is enhanced for students by pairing them with a meeting mentor, an ESA member graduate student or ecologist, and providing an alumni network to help them gain the most from the meeting experience. All awardees will be expected to arrive one to two days prior to the official start of the meeting for orientation events. Awardees will work with SEEDS staff at ESA to make their travel plans. To make the most of limited funds, student awardees will be required to share a hotel room.

Undergraduate Student Travel Awards promote the participation of underrepresented students in the field of ecology. Undergraduate students from underrepresented minority groups as well as other students with a demonstrated commitment to the program’s mission are eligible to apply for program opportunities. Undergraduate students enrolled in an institution within the United Sates are eligible to apply for travel awards; students who graduated in December or May in the same academic year of the meeting for which they're applying are also eligible. Preference will be given to students who demonstrate an interest in pursuing a career in ecology; who plan to present at the meeting; who exhibit promise in contributing to the ecology program at their home institution or in their community; and, who show promise as an educator or mentor. Participants are selected based academic promise, interest in exploring a career in ecology, potential for serving as a mentor and teacher, and demonstrated commitment to increasing opportunities for underrepresented students.

Alumni Travel Awards are for former SEEDS students who are continuing in an ecology career. The SEEDS program awards a select group of program alumni travel awards to attend the ESA Annual Meeting and serve as near peers in the support network for SEEDS undergraduate students. Requirements include having participated in a SEEDS event in the past (field trip, ESA Annual Meeting, or fellowship) and being currently enrolled in a graduate program in an institution within the United Sates. Preference will be given to students who demonstrate the pursuit of ecology (i.e. attending graduate school); who plan to present research at the meeting; who exhibit promise in contributing to the ecology program at their home institution or in their community; and, who show promise as an educator or mentor. Participants are selected based academic promise, demonstrated pursuit of a career in ecology, potential for serving as a mentor and teacher, and demonstrated commitment to increasing opportunities for underrepresented students.

Faculty Travel Awards are for faculty advisors at SEEDS Campus Ecology Chapters. Current Campus Ecology Chapter faculty advisors or those who submit an application to establish a Chapter by the travel award deadline are eligible. Preference will be given to faculty who foster underrepresented students in ecology and for whom attendance at a scientific meeting will have a significant impact – for their own professional development, for their work in ecology at their institution, and for the development of their abilities to guide and support students in conducting research. Preference will also be given to those who plan to present research at the meeting and to advisors who maintain Chapters in good standing.
