Chapter Activities

 

A descriptive summary of each of the major Chapter activities (seminars/workshops, field trips, fundraisers, outreach/community service, etc.) during the past academic year. The activity, the timeframe, and the persons involved (Chapter members, campus, school students, community, etc.). People who were included and served, and how many.

From January 2013 through April 2013, SEEDS members from Fort Lewis College, as well as the community, had the chance to participate in any of four events. The events included two meetings, a movie, and a field-trip. The first meeting was held in February, in which we discussed what SEEDS was about and brainstormed potential SEEDS events for the semester. The second meeting occurred on March 12, in which Dr. Julie Korb from Fort Lewis College gave a talk about her ongoing plant-pollinator research in the alpine tundra. We assigned leadership positions (Vice President, Treasurer, and Secretary) and we decided on two SEEDS events – a movie and weekend field-trip.
On Wednesday March 27, 2013, SEEDS members watched the award-winning documentary “Dirt!” This movie focuses on the biological, cultural, and social importance of soil. The movie also conveys information on how composition of soil is changing as a result of climate change, increase in severe storms, agriculture, etc.
From April 5 through April 7, SEEDS members participated in a clean-up event on the San Juan River. The river trip occurred from Sand Island, Utah to Mexican Hat, Utah and consisted of two nights. The primary objectives of this event were to clean up trash along the San Juan River and to provide an opportunity for students that would allow them to experience the natural world and become engaged with the biology and geology of the southwestern desert. It was a successful event. We collected about 6 bags worth of trash – ranging from plastic bottles to automobile tires. Some students had never been to this part of Utah and were thrilled to be immersed in this part of the southwest. We saw Desert Bighorn Sheep (Ovis canadensis nelsnoii), Great Blue Heron (Ardea Herodias), American Bald Eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus), and lizards.

A summary of the Chapter’s ideas or plans for the next academic year.

With the success that occurred this semester, SEEDS members at Fort Lewis College have decided that at least two events should occur each semester. The first event will be a local event in which SEEDS members and anybody else who wishes to join SEEDS can easily partake. Such an event includes watching environmental documentaries and participating in an discussion after the film. Other events could include cleaning-up trash from local areas (i.e., the Animas River, Big Canyon) or attending a talk by a professional ecologist. The second event will involve a weekend long field trip/clean-up trip. Some SEEDS members have suggested cleaning up trash along a different part of the San Juan, such as the Goosenecks.
This past year, SEEDS members focused on increasing the number of students in SEEDS at Fort Lewis College. Despite the great increase of SEEDS participants, there needs to be some additional recruitment next year. A main goal for SEEDS next year is to increase the number of underrepresented groups. In order to diversify SEEDS, we plan on communicating with El Centro de Muchos Colores and the Native American Center at Fort Lewis College.
