{"id":752,"date":"2023-05-16T17:36:12","date_gmt":"2023-05-16T17:36:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/esa.org\/2022\/?page_id=752"},"modified":"2023-06-06T14:41:02","modified_gmt":"2023-06-06T14:41:02","slug":"building-an-inclusive-society","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/esa.org\/2022\/building-an-inclusive-society\/","title":{"rendered":"Building an Inclusive Society"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-vertical is-layout-flex wp-container-core-group-is-layout-2c90304e wp-block-group-is-layout-flex\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/esa.org\/esablog\/2022\/08\/04\/lets-talk-about-diversity-celebrating-the-human-dimension-in-ecology\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Our work to build a professional organization for all ecologists<\/a> continued in 2022, buoyed as always by our members\u2019 generosity and willingness to collectively open doors for students and scientists who face institutional and social barriers to participation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Notably, our community of ecologists utilizing Traditional Ecological Knowledge by working equitably with Indigenous scientists and communities continued to grow. Building on the <a href=\"https:\/\/esa.org\/events\/esa-webinars\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">year-long webinar series organized by the TEK Section<\/a>, we and partner societies were awarded an NSF LEAPS grant to connect Western ecologists with TEK practitioners; we additionally received a substantial subgrant from the American Indian Science and Engineering Society. This culminated in a two-day workshop with tribal elders, Indigenous scientists and ESA leaders at the 2022 Annual Meeting in Montreal\u2014watch out for the second iteration in Portland!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Additionally, our flagship undergraduate diversity program, <a href=\"https:\/\/esa.org\/seeds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SEEDS<\/a>, was able to swing back into action after a two-year break. Nearly 200 SEEDS students participated in <a href=\"https:\/\/esa.org\/seeds\/field-trip\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">regional and national field trips<\/a>, and the annual leadership meeting in Arizona. We also added <a href=\"https:\/\/esa.org\/seeds\/chapters\/chapters-locations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">seven new campus chapters<\/a> to the network, bringing the total of active chapters up to 30!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We hit another important milestone in 2022 by fully funding the SEEDS national field trips in perpetuity. Following previous years\u2019 successful campaigns to meet the goals of the <a href=\"https:\/\/esa.org\/giving\/endowments\/henry-l-gholz-seeds-national-field-trip\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Henry L. Gholz SEEDS National Field Trip Endowment<\/a>, last year was powered by a highly ambitious match that saw us ultimately clear $253,000 in total contributions from more than 300 donors just to the endowment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/esa.org\/2022\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/68\/2023\/05\/seeds-PR_600.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-839 img-fluid\" srcset=\"https:\/\/esa.org\/2022\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/68\/2023\/05\/seeds-PR_600.jpg 600w, https:\/\/esa.org\/2022\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/68\/2023\/05\/seeds-PR_600-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>SEEDS students on a regional field trip to Guanica Dry Forest Site in Puerto Rico<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-7387b849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In further work supporting researchers, our second year of the <a href=\"https:\/\/esa.org\/about\/diversity-in-ecology\/eee-scholarships\/list-of-scholars\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ESA Excellence in Ecology Scholars<\/a> welcomed a new cohort of four early\/mid-career scholars with financial support for their career growth as researchers and leaders in building DEIJ in STEM spaces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/esa.org\/2022\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/68\/2023\/05\/EEE-scholars_600.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-836 img-fluid\" srcset=\"https:\/\/esa.org\/2022\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/68\/2023\/05\/EEE-scholars_600.jpg 600w, https:\/\/esa.org\/2022\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/68\/2023\/05\/EEE-scholars_600-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>The <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/esa.org\/about\/diversity-in-ecology\/eee-scholarships\/list-of-scholars\/\" target=\"_blank\">first cohort of EEE Scholars<\/a> at the 2022 Annual Meeting | left to right, Executive Director Catherine O\u2019Riordan; President Dennis Ojima; Adriana L. Zavaleta; Diversity Committee Chair Carmen Cid<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our work on inclusion and equitable participation continues, for instance by continuing to work through another NSF LEAPS grant to send leaders to events for BIPOC scientists and students like <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/esa.org\/esablog\/2022\/11\/28\/esa-meeting-diverse-students-where-they-are-esa-sacnas-and-manrrs\/\" target=\"_blank\">SACNAS and MANRRS<\/a>.
