{"id":786,"date":"2023-05-16T16:35:18","date_gmt":"2023-05-16T16:35:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/esa.org\/2022\/?page_id=786"},"modified":"2023-06-06T14:36:20","modified_gmt":"2023-06-06T14:36:20","slug":"influencing-science-policy","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/esa.org\/2022\/influencing-science-policy\/","title":{"rendered":"Influencing Science Policy"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-7387b849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of ESA\u2019s strategic priorities is to <strong>promote the use of ecological science to address environmental challenges<\/strong> by <strong>communicating ecological knowledge relevant for decision-making to policymakers, resources managers and the public<\/strong>, and every year our Public Affairs Office, <a href=\"https:\/\/esa.org\/policy\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/esa.org\/policy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Policy Section<\/a> and many members who engage local, national and even international leaders work hard to advocate for policy and business decisions that are informed by good ecological science.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2022, we issued <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/esa.org\/public-policy\/letters-from-esa-president\/\" target=\"_blank\">32 advocacy letters<\/a> (of our own and with allied organizations) as part of our regular outreach to government. But more importantly, we directly involved our members in that work \u2013 we held individual webinars on the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/esa.zoom.us\/meeting\/register\/tZIscuiorT0jGNwLsmKaf9Nc6kmndgVsQScO\" target=\"_blank\">National Climate Assessment<\/a> and <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/esa.zoom.us\/rec\/share\/1DP5-nwLy3s4ZL5Bai4lS9WMvMTiXzPN7fMCOsNYHIoNUyRt2becVyxx_OM8oM0X._tohcmcAvRpdIQw5?startTime=1670346124000\" target=\"_blank\">National Nature Assessment<\/a>, held a debrief with members to <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/esa.zoom.us\/rec\/share\/qcJHOOHSifElyk9dDkfy7Habe2Er-i9BPmXbfi2WvOsRFTJAiGaZkM2kJ4Z8WwGz.k4d8aN30abcGhDl_?startTime=1643298328000\" target=\"_blank\">report back from COP26,<\/a> with more than 230 in attendance, and badged several members for <a href=\"https:\/\/esa.org\/esablog\/2022\/11\/08\/esa-urges-all-nations-to-take-climate-action-at-cop27\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">COP27<\/a>. At the Annual Meeting, staff and members held <strong>10 different events related to science policy<\/strong>, likewise with several hundred in attendance.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/esa.org\/2022\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/68\/2023\/05\/2022_GSPA_collage-1024x768.png\" alt=\"An image collage of head shots off the 2022 winners of ESA's Graduate Student Policy Award\" class=\"wp-image-837 img-fluid\" srcset=\"https:\/\/esa.org\/2022\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/68\/2023\/05\/2022_GSPA_collage-1024x768.png 1024w, https:\/\/esa.org\/2022\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/68\/2023\/05\/2022_GSPA_collage-300x225.png 300w, https:\/\/esa.org\/2022\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/68\/2023\/05\/2022_GSPA_collage-768x576.png 768w, https:\/\/esa.org\/2022\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/68\/2023\/05\/2022_GSPA_collage.png 1402w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the highlight was being able to host 44 winners of the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/esa.org\/public-policy\/get-involved\/esa-graduate-student-policy-award\/\" target=\"_blank\">Graduate Student Policy Award<\/a> for our annual two-day event meant to help build the next generation of policy advocates.
