We took big steps forward in 2022 as we built on the last several years of enhanced career support for ecologists.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/esa.org\/certification\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">certification<\/a> program continued to grow, with <strong>125 newly certified ecologists<\/strong> across all career levels, but especially including all-time high numbers of new Ecologist in Training and Associate Ecologist awardees. We also welcomed six new <a href=\"https:\/\/esa.org\/certification\/approved-providers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">approved providers<\/a> to our list:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>American Society of Landscape Architects<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Center for Wildlife Studies<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Citizen Artist<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Society of American Foresters<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sound Solutions for Sustainable Science<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Yale Environmental Leadership Training Initiative<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/esa.org\/2022\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/68\/2023\/05\/grad-school_600.jpg\" alt=\"Standing room only outside a presentation on graduate school success by ESA leader Kathleen Carroll at the 2022 Annual Meeting\" class=\"wp-image-831 img-fluid\" srcset=\"https:\/\/esa.org\/2022\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/68\/2023\/05\/grad-school_600.jpg 600w, https:\/\/esa.org\/2022\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/68\/2023\/05\/grad-school_600-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Standing room only outside a presentation on graduate school success by ESA<\/em><br><em>leader Kathleen Carroll at the 2022 Annual Meeting\u2019s Career Central<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With the return to an in-person Annual Meeting, we were able to re-launch the full <a href=\"https:\/\/esa.org\/montreal2022\/career-central\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Career Central program<\/a>, which included opportunities to explore different career options (with deep dives into ESG and ecological restoration), workshops on resume writing, interviewing and storytelling, a guide to grad school and, as always, live resume reviews and mock job interviews \u2013 more than <strong>three dozen total volunteers<\/strong> provided guidance to <strong>250+ attendees<\/strong>, with plenty of follow-up conversations extending into poster sessions and social events. The Annual Meeting also included the <a href=\"https:\/\/esa.org\/programs\/ecology-education\/reefs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">REEFS<\/a> (Resources for Ecology Education \u2013 Fair and Share) workshop, with 20 educators joining to explore new advances in successfully teaching ecology at all levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Working from home, we hosted 13 <a href=\"https:\/\/esa.org\/events\/esa-webinars\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">virtual events<\/a> on career-related topics, including two for <a href=\"https:\/\/esa.org\/seeds\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SEEDS<\/a> students that allowed <strong>50 undergraduate students<\/strong> to examine career opportunities in ecology. We also launched the second cohort of <a href=\"https:\/\/esa.org\/ecologyplus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">EcologyPlus<\/a> in Washington, DC, which includes 1<strong>5 underrepresented students<\/strong> receiving career mentoring from professionals. Our partner work helped students dig into ecology careers as well\u2014a record <strong>542 students<\/strong> applied for roles in the <a href=\"https:\/\/esa.org\/scientists-in-parks\/about-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Scientists in Parks<\/a> program (hosted by NPS), and <strong>30 students <\/strong>nominated by ESA members were ultimately placed at USGS sites as part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/esa.org\/nextgencareers\/usgsfieldinternships\">ESA-USGS Summer Fellowships Program<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As a professional organization for ecologists, it\u2019s core to ESA\u2019s mission to support the professional development of its members and community.
