Our goal is to communicate ecological knowledge relevant for decision-making to policymakers, resource managers, and the public. Every year, our Public Affairs Office, <a href=\"https:\/\/esa.org\/policy\/\">Policy Section<\/a>, and dedicated members\u2014especially those on the <a href=\"https:\/\/esa.org\/about\/governance\/committees\/public-affairs-committee\/\">Public Affairs Committee<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/esa.org\/public-policy\/get-involved\/rapid-response-team\/\">Rapid Response Team<\/a>\u2014work tirelessly to advocate for policies that are informed by sound ecological science. These efforts exemplify our commitment to integrating ecological science into policy decisions and fostering a robust dialogue between scientists and policymakers.<\/p>\n<p>In 2023, we continued to play a pivotal role in influencing science policy. Our efforts included the submission of <a href=\"https:\/\/esa.org\/public-policy\/letters-from-esa-president\/\">25 advocacy letters<\/a>, both independently and with allied organizations, as part of our ongoing outreach to government officials. We issued <strong>three official statements<\/strong> on key environmental issues and, through input submitted by ESA members during open calls, provided expert comments on the <strong>National Nature Assessment<\/strong> and the <strong>Biodiversity and Climate Change Assessment<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Our work at the 2023 Annual Meeting included <strong>10 policy events<\/strong> that drew significant participation from attendees. These included courses on engaging with policymakers, special sessions on navigating policy careers, and contributed talks analyzing policy impacts. The most notable event was a <a href=\"https:\/\/esa2023.eventscribe.net\/fsPopup.asp?PresentationID=1231800&amp;Mode=presInfo\">town hall on the National Nature Assessment<\/a> with <strong>Jane Lubchenco<\/strong> from the <strong>White House Office of Science and Technology Policy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Very literally close to home (as in, headquarters!) we had 15 winners of the <a href=\"https:\/\/esa.org\/public-policy\/get-involved\/esa-graduate-student-policy-award\/\">Graduate Student Policy Award<\/a> in our annual two-day event in DC. These emerging leaders received hands-on training from staff and highly experienced ESA members, then applied what they learned over <strong>30 meetings with Congressional staff<\/strong> on Capitol Hill.<\/p>\n<p>ESA\u2019s influence also extended to the international stage. As we had in 2022, we secured 10 observer badges for <a href=\"https:\/\/esa.org\/esablog\/2023\/11\/29\/esa-urges-all-nations-to-take-climate-action-at-cop28\/\">COP28<\/a>, the United Nations\u2019 28th Congress of Parties on climate, which allowed members to <a href=\"https:\/\/esa.org\/esablog\/2023\/12\/11\/esa-at-cop28-day-6\/\">directly observe the processes<\/a> by which international policy is made.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>One of ESA\u2019s strategic priorities is to address environmental challenges by promoting the use of ecological science.
