{"id":1390,"date":"2017-02-27T17:05:44","date_gmt":"2017-02-27T17:05:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/advancingecocomm.wordpress.com\/?page_id=1390"},"modified":"2021-03-03T00:12:17","modified_gmt":"2021-03-03T00:12:17","slug":"myscicomm-contributor-guidelines","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/esa.org\/communication-engagement\/scientist-scicomm\/myscicomm-contributor-guidelines\/","title":{"rendered":"#MySciComm Contributor Guidelines"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>What is the #MySciComm Series?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Drawing inspiration from the #MySci hashtag, in spring 2017 the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ESA Communication &amp; Engagement Section<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> launched a\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/esa.org\/communication-engagement\/category\/myscicomm\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">blog series called #MySciComm<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We explore the personal and professional journeys of science communicators, including the joys, struggles, and helpful resources that surfaced along their way.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Through MySciComm, we showcase the wide range of types of SciComm that people can do, from photography and illustration to serving as an institutional press officer and public engagement research, and so much more. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This is an emerging profession, and there are not only a lot of ways of doing SciComm, but a lot of ways of getting into it. Our #MySciComm series highlights some of the possibilities, and we invite contributors to be candid about the (rarely linear) ways they got into SciComm.\u00a0The #MySciComm series demystifies careers and opportunities by actually explaining how SciComm opportunities arise and how series contributors capitalized on them. We \u201cgo beyond the CV\u201d in telling these scicomm backstories.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>For more about the motives and objectives of the series, read <a href=\"https:\/\/esa.org\/communication-engagement\/2017\/09\/13\/myscicomm-on-the-esa_org-blog-series-editors-discuss-what-myscicomm-is-and-why-it-matters\/\">this op-ed<\/a>, published by ESA\u2019s <em>EcoTone<\/em> blog.\u00a0In the op-ed, #MySciComm series founding editors\u2019 explain what makes the series special and important, within and beyond the realms of science communication.<\/p>\n<h2><b>Questions contributors answer<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Contributors write a 1,000-3,000-word blog post that responds to the following two questions:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">How did you get into your type of science communication? Think of this as your career trajectory, your scicomm \u2018origin story,\u2019 or even just one anecdote that epitomizes how you came to the work you do now. After all, the path to a scicomm career is rarely linear! (500+ words)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What are 1-3 tips\/resources you use in your current scicomm work that you would recommend to new or experienced scicomm professionals? We host the #MySciComm blog series in order to address some of these member interests.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>The path to SciComm isn\u2019t linear.<\/h2>\n<p>With that in mind, we specifically feature diverse contributors<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, in terms of experience, path to SciComm, nationality, identity, and other factors.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Contributor Checklist<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>A complete template for contributors is available <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/19NdY83K8dRsGSLD6qAfSDn7EAfFHUBm5cJBuHBuBtCw\/edit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The audience of the ESA Communication &amp; Engagement Section blog is fellow scientists and SciComm practitioners (including scientists considering becoming communicators, those in transition, and those who are experienced communicators already).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Contributors provide at least one high-resolution (minimum 300 dpi at 5\u2033 on shortest dimension) image <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">of themselves<\/span>\u00a0to accompany their post. This could be a photo, scan of a hand-written or drawn image, etc. Ideally, this image is a landscape\/horizontal image. This must be submitted when they submit their draft.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\">We also ask for a bio and a title suggestion. Contributors should submit these when submitting their first draft. Bio examples are available <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1sDbGxG67HEKi5ucU-OT8Z4RZ0K9HG9LSgRcT26NoTE8\/edit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">All pitches and drafts are subject to editorial approval and editing at all stages of the publishing process. Contributors can anticipate between one to several rounds of editing for their piece. Contributors will likely work with one or more of our editors \u2013 a commissioning editor and a handling editor, possibly along with . a reviewing editor. So, please anticipate there is potential for a bit of a time investment as we hone each piece together. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Contributors can feel free to start with a rough idea, if that feels most feasible. We\u2019re happy to read rough drafts and help hone them.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We invest in editing this way, because we ascribe to the philosophy that writing is thinking, and thus, iteration and revision are essential aspects of compelling and engaging writing.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Deadlines<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Please plan to submit a first draft no later than a month prior to your scheduled publication. This allows time for editing, confirming\/finalizing draft with you, formatting, and scheduling.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Please specify an anticipated draft submission date.
