We maintain a list of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/esa.org\/communication-engagement\/annual-meeting\/past-annual-meetings\/\">SciComm, Engagement, and Inclusivity activities and sessions hosted by others<\/a> at annual ESA meetings, too. Please\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/esa.org\/communication-engagement\/annual-meeting\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">follow this link<\/a>\u00a0for details about ways to propose sessions, get support on a proposal, and\/or help with sessions and events the Communication &amp; Engagement Section is planning. Follow the links for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/esa.org\/communication-engagement\/annual-meeting\/\">this year\u2019s conference activities<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/esa.org\/communication-engagement\/annual-meeting\/past-annual-meetings\/\">past conference info<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>#MySciComm blog series:\u00a0<\/strong>This <a href=\"https:\/\/esa.org\/communication-engagement\/category\/myscicomm\/\">series\u00a0on our blog<\/a> highlights the diverse nature of science communication careers, opportunities, and pathways through an on-going series of guest posts. Contributors (top science communicators and sciommers in training from a wide range of fields) candidly share their personal and professional journeys.\u00a0Each post ends with advice and resources for people looking to enter this vital, meaningful, and expanding field.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SciComm Resource of the Week blog series: <\/strong>This <a href=\"https:\/\/esa.org\/communication-engagement\/category\/resource-of-the-week\/\">series on our blog<\/a> reviews books and other scicomm resources, including websites, peer-reviewed literature, and more. Reviews provide unique content about resources that have direct or indirect relevance to the wide range of scicomm careers, approaches, and interests of Section members.<\/p>\n<p><strong>C&amp;E &amp; Broader Impacts Incentives:\u00a0<\/strong>We are working toward funding and resources to further incentivize communication and engagement by ESA members, through fundraising to establish awards and an active leadership role in the Engage ESA initiative and on-going collaboration with ESA\u2019s Public Affairs Committee and Office.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h3>Long-range Planning<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Partnerships:<\/strong>\u00a0We continue planning collaborative activities with: Other ESA Sections (like Policy, Inclusive Ecology, Early Career, Student, and Education);\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/esa.org\/seeds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ESA\u2019s SEEDS<\/a>, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/esa.org\/esa\/education-and-diversity\/cde\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ESA Committee on Diversity and Education<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/esa.org\/esa\/public-affairs\/public-affairs-staff\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ESA\u2019s Public Affairs Committee<\/a>; and external organizations and efforts such as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aaas.org\/pes\/communicating-science-workshops\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">AAAS<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ucsusa.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Union of Concerned Scientists<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.storycollider.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Story Collider<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.earthstewardshipinitiative.com\/\">Earth Stewardship Initiative<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/comscicon.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ComSciCon<\/a>. You\u2019ll notice our efforts here in our #ESA sessions \u2013 they involve partnerships with Policy, Inclusive Ecology, Education and other sections, as well as AAAS, UCS, and CSC. We have also identified an official liaison between our section and the Student Section. And, we now sit on the ESA Committee on Diversity and Education. Please be in touch with us if you have collaboration ideas and\/or want to be part of these collaborative efforts.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Activities outside of annual conferences:\u00a0<\/strong>We\u2019ve begun brainstorming ideas for how our section could support members year-round. See the volunteer opportunities above for some of these ideas. But, we know we\u2019ve just scratched the surface. If you have ideas, please\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/esa.org\/communication-engagement\/contact-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">connect with us<\/a>! We\u2019d love to consider how they may fit into the long-range planning grant we plan to submit this fall.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Governance<\/strong>:\u00a0Following a\u00a0productive discussion during our annual business meeting at ESA 2017, the officers have followed up on several directives proposed and voted on by members at that meeting. These include:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 20px;\">1. Addressing language in the bylaws that complicates section governance to increase efficiency and inclusivity.\u00a0\u00a0These changes were submitted to\/accepted by ESA in January 2018.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 20px;\">2. Extending the secretary\u2019s term from 1 to 2 years\u00a0to enhance continuity and increase section productivity.\u00a0This change was submitted to\/accepted by ESA in January 2018.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 20px;\">3. Establishing and strengthening collaborations with partners within and beyond ESA. See above.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 20px;\">4. Enhancing\/expanding ESA members\u2019 awareness of the Communication &amp; Engagement Section to a) engage more people, b) provide resources to a broader swath of ESA, and c) recruit more members for our Section. We have begun this work by formally changing our name to the Communication and Engagement Section (formerly SciComm Section). This name is more inclusive of the range of C&amp;E activities our members undertake, as well as being much easier to spot on the list of ESA sections you can join. We also develop a SciComm Lit\/Resource Review Series, launched on our blog in Spring 2018.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019d greatly appreciate your help with objectives a-c, so please be in touch!<\/p>\n<div class=\"well\">The Ecological Society of America welcomes all ecologists, supporters and enthusiasts as members, as do our many sections and chapters.
