(Photo by Annaliese Hettinger)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Retrospective by Jennifer Purrenhage, series co-editor and Communication and Engagement Section secretary<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/advancingecocomm.wordpress.com\/2018\/03\/07\/human-connections-through-with-for-scicomm-myscicomm-2017-in-review\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Bethann Garramon Merkle\u2019s recent #MySciComm 2017 Year in Review<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> highlighted takeaways from our 2017 contributors on building human connections through scicomm.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As I looked back on the 2017 #MySciComm contributions, an additional set of theme emerged from our contributors. They offered advice and encouragement for those of us looking to either up our communication and engagement \u00a0game or transition from an existing career path or position into a scicomm position. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>1. Start Now<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You might imagine countless reasons for waiting, or perceived obstacles to getting started in scicomm. But our 2017 #MySciComm contributors reminded us of the importance of starting now and starting where you are. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br>\n<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/advancingecocomm.wordpress.com\/2017\/05\/17\/myscicomm-katie-burke-on-forging-a-path-from-science-to-science-journalism\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Katie Burke<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> warned that she often gives the advice \u2018Start Writing,\u2019 but that people rarely act on it. Katie linked to online resources that can help scicommers pitch their writing to media outlets that she says are \u2018hungry for content.\u2019 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/advancingecocomm.wordpress.com\/2017\/05\/17\/myscicomm-katie-burke-on-forging-a-path-from-science-to-science-journalism\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Katie Burke<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/advancingecocomm.wordpress.com\/2017\/06\/21\/myscicomm-kristina-young-on-scicomm-and-founding-the-science-moab-radio-show\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Kristina Young<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">both encouraged us to \u2018make the time\u2019 to create content because there will never be a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">perfect<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> time<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">And they suggested that it likely won\u2019t take as long as we worry it will. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/advancingecocomm.wordpress.com\/2017\/10\/11\/myscicomm-william-chen-on-games-conferences-and-transitioning-to-a-scicomm-career\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Will Chen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and I (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/advancingecocomm.wordpress.com\/2017\/12\/06\/myscicomm-jennifer-purrenhage-on-teaching-undergrads-as-scicomm\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Jennifer Purrenhage<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">) urged aspiring scicommers to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">stop aspiring<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and just start <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">being<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> science communicators. Will suggested creating an example of your particular kind of scicomm and then testing it with family, friends, or even an online community. I reminded readers that there are opportunities to practice and do scicomm in our existing positions \u2014 we don\u2019t necessarily need to be somewhere or someone else to get started (and, in fact, we may have already started without realizing it!). Finally, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/advancingecocomm.wordpress.com\/2017\/07\/26\/myscicomm-virginia-schutte-on-leaving-academia-and-the-u-s-and-learning-how-to-create-scicomm-career-opportunities-abroad\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Virginia Schutte<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> offered a different, and valuable, perspective on \u2018getting started\u2019 when she discussed what it can be like to get on the job market for a scicomm position before you feel ready. <\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>2.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><b>Get Training<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Good news! For those of us who are still resisting the \u2018Start Now\u2019 advice, perhaps we can justify waiting until we get some training. Our #2017 MySciComm contributors were huge proponents of training, and they provided general advice and links to specific resources.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Look back at posts from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/advancingecocomm.wordpress.com\/2017\/03\/08\/myscicomm-dr-shane-hanlon\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Shane Hanlon<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/advancingecocomm.wordpress.com\/2017\/04\/05\/myscicomm-megan-litwhiler\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Megan Litwhiler<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/advancingecocomm.wordpress.com\/2017\/05\/03\/myscicomm-annaliese-hettinger\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Annaliese Hettinger<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/advancingecocomm.wordpress.com\/2017\/07\/05\/myscicomm-ariana-sutton-griers-confessions-of-a-not-quite-broadway-scientist\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ariana Sutton-Grier<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> for links to some of their favorite scicomm resources and training opportunities, including a few that most everyone ranked at the top of their lists: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.compassscicomm.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">COMPASS<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sharingscience.agu.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">AGU<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aaas.org\/Comunicating-Science-Workshops\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">AAAS<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/advancingecocomm.wordpress.com\/2017\/10\/25\/myscicomm-rose-hendricks-of-comscicon-on-harnessing-insights-from-psychology-for-scicomm\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Rose Hendricks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2019 description of her experience with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/comscicon.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ComSciCon<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> might be particularly interesting for our graduate-student readers. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/advancingecocomm.wordpress.com\/2017\/06\/21\/myscicomm-kristina-young-on-scicomm-and-founding-the-science-moab-radio-show\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Kristina Young\u2019s<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> post about communication through radio includes suggestions for radio-specific workshops and internships, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/advancingecocomm.wordpress.com\/2017\/08\/03\/myscicomm-lucy-frisch-on-switching-gears-from-book-publicist-to-science-storytelling-advocate\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Lucy Frisch<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> reminded us that we are not born storytellers and can benefit from specific training in this area too. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/advancingecocomm.wordpress.com\/2017\/03\/22\/myscicomm-bethann-garramon-merkle\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Bethann Merkle<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> recommended improving our visual communication skills\u2013drawing, graphic design, photography, graphs\/figures, and conference posters\u2013through training and practice, and she shared some of her favorite resources for enhancing visual communication skills. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/advancingecocomm.wordpress.com\/2017\/06\/28\/myscicomm-josh-silberg-on-embracing-scicomm-skill-development\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Josh Silberg<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/advancingecocomm.wordpress.com\/2017\/05\/31\/myscicomm-greg-nickerson\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Greg Nickerson<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> reminded us to take stock of the skills and training we\u2019ve already acquired that might also serve us well in scicomm. And <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/advancingecocomm.wordpress.com\/2017\/04\/05\/myscicomm-megan-litwhiler\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Megan Litwhiler<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/advancingecocomm.wordpress.com\/2017\/07\/05\/myscicomm-ariana-sutton-griers-confessions-of-a-not-quite-broadway-scientist\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ariana Sutton-Grier<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">suggested that formal trainings aren\u2019t the only way to improve our scicomm skills. Megan noted how much we can learn from colleagues at conferences and by visiting museums, and Ariana implored us to read everything we can about scicomm. One the scicomm books that Ariana mentioned will be featured in our <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/advancingecocomm.wordpress.com\/scientist-scicomm\/book-reviews-sought\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">new Lit Review Series<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, which we hope will help you triage your own scicomm reading list!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>3.\u00a0Find<\/strong><b> Your Role.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Something we can already see, after one year of #MySciComm contributions, is the diversity of roles that people can and do play in science communication and engagement. Our 2017 contributors demonstrated this simply by sharing their stories. Many advised us to find our unique role by: looking for the gaps and filling them with our personal strengths and interests (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">e.g.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/advancingecocomm.wordpress.com\/2017\/02\/22\/myscicomm-kika-tuff\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Kika Tuff<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/advancingecocomm.wordpress.com\/2017\/05\/03\/myscicomm-annaliese-hettinger\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Annaliese Hettinger<\/span><\/a><b>, <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/advancingecocomm.wordpress.com\/2017\/07\/13\/myscicomm-priya-shukla-on-sharing-the-stories-of-marginalized-scientists\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Priya Shukla<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">), acknowledging the communication and engagement skills we have been acquiring and honing all along (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">e.g.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/advancingecocomm.wordpress.com\/2017\/06\/28\/myscicomm-josh-silberg-on-embracing-scicomm-skill-development\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Josh Silberg<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/advancingecocomm.wordpress.com\/2017\/09\/27\/myscicomm-sarah-chevalier-prather-on-curating-science-exhibit-research-and-development-for-interactive-science-museums\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sarah Chevalier Prather<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/advancingecocomm.wordpress.com\/2017\/12\/06\/myscicomm-jennifer-purrenhage-on-teaching-undergrads-as-scicomm\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Jennifer Purrenhage<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">), and identifying our own style and individual contributions to diverse teams (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">e.g.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/advancingecocomm.wordpress.com\/2017\/04\/21\/myscicomm-diogo-verissimo\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Diogo Verissimo<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/advancingecocomm.wordpress.com\/2017\/06\/14\/myscicomm-skylar-bayer-on-saying-yes-and-to-science-storytelling-on-radio-national-tv-and-beyond\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Skylar Bayer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/advancingecocomm.wordpress.com\/2017\/07\/26\/myscicomm-virginia-schutte-on-leaving-academia-and-the-u-s-and-learning-how-to-create-scicomm-career-opportunities-abroad\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Virginia Schutte<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Our 2017 #MySciComm contributors reminded us to be patient, persistent, and brave. <\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">They also discussed the concerns that some of us may have when transitioning from <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">doing<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> science to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">communicating<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> science. We were reminded that doing scicomm is not mutually exclusive with doing science and teaching science.
