While I can barely recall the organization or content of the presentation, one memory that does stick with me is my dad furiously typing on his Blackberry. No, he wasn\u2019t distracted by calls from work or being rude; he was googling my words, trying to grasp meaning in the jargon I used, words like \u2018allochthonous\u2019 and \u2018autochthonous.\u2019<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong>Jargon \u2013 technical language \u2013 certainly has its place in the discourse of science.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In our research papers. In our presentations at scientific meetings. Dare I say, our dissertation seminars. You want your audience to hear what you have to say, not spend your whole talk googling your words.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Learning to plain-speak your science takes practice and determination. You get better at it the more you do it.<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>And so at ESA 2016, the Science Communication Section wants to give you an opportunity to practice sharing your science in a supportive space with a friendly audience.<\/p>\n<p>But with one (well, really two) caveats:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>You can only use the 1,000 most common words in the English language (Yes, this is extreme and a bit artificial, BUT constraints make you think creatively and deliberately about your word choices).<\/li>\n<li>It\u2019s an Ignite session so you only get 5 minutes and 20 seconds per slide before it automatically advances. (Why the added challenge? The ESA Meeting Committee thought this session would best fit this high-energy format).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Our inspiration for this quite-possibly-masochistic exercise in science communication came from the <a href=\"http:\/\/sharingscience.agu.org\/\">Sharing Science Program<\/a> of the American Geophysical Union. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>At AGU\u2019s Fall 2015 meeting, Sharing Science hosted a session called the <a href=\"https:\/\/agu.confex.com\/agu\/fm15\/meetingapp.cgi\/Session\/8250\">Up-Goer 5 Giving-It-a-Try (aka Challenge)<\/a>. The session was itself inspired by Randall Munroe\u2019s famous <a href=\"http:\/\/xkcd.com\/1133\/\">xkcd comic<\/a> in which he explains the Saturn V rocket using only the 1000 most common words in the English language.\u00a0 (Munroe\u2019s since gone on to do a whole book in the style of Up Goer Five called <a href=\"https:\/\/xkcd.com\/thing-explainer\/\"><em>Thing Explainer: Complicated Stuff in Simple Words<\/em><\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>The results \u2013 as evident by <a href=\"https:\/\/storify.com\/americangeophys\/up-goer-five-challenge-agu15-56785d5dbb28f8527da12a9d\">this Storify of the session<\/a> \u2013 were nothing short of spectacular.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And so, we\u2019re seeking 10 brave ecologists to give it a try at our #ESA2016 Ignite session. Good news is that another fellow, Theo Sanderson, created an <a href=\"http:\/\/splasho.com\/upgoer5\/\">Up-Goer Five text editor<\/a> where you can copy and paste your words into a box and see if they meet the 1000-word criteria.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h1 style=\"text-align:center\"><span style=\"color:#ff9900\"><strong><del>What say you?
