What is the future of interdisciplinary research in ecology?<\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif,Apple Color Emoji,Segoe UI Emoji,NotoColorEmoji,Segoe UI Symbol,Android Emoji,EmojiSymbols;color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Times;font-size: medium\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Interdisciplinarity\">Interdisciplinary<\/a> research is one of the most commonly used catchphrases in the field of ecology and broader science in general. This term has been used (and misused) so much that its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nsf.gov\/od\/oia\/additional_resources\/interdisciplinary_research\/definition.jsp\">definition<\/a> has become very <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nsf.gov\/statistics\/ncses12200\/content.cfm?pub_id=4149&amp;id=2\">ambiguous<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.arj.no\/2012\/03\/12\/disciplinarities-2\/\">context-dependent<\/a>. Ecologists generally embrace the importance of interdisciplinary work, but their vision and application varies drastically. <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif,Apple Color Emoji,Segoe UI Emoji,NotoColorEmoji,Segoe UI Symbol,Android Emoji,EmojiSymbols;color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Times;font-size: medium\">We will host a workshop as part of ESA\u2019s Annual Meeting in Baltimore\u00a0to address the current state of interdisciplinary research in ecology, including major benefits and challenges facing researchers, and the future outlook of the field regarding interdisciplinary work. By understanding the challenges that interdisciplinary researchers confront, we hope to better foster interdisciplinary research and scholarship in the academy. We will present an open-discussion workshop emphasizing interdisciplinary ecology from the perspectives of scientists at diverse career stages, culminating in a peer-reviewed publication addressing many of the ideas presented over the course of the workshop.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif,Apple Color Emoji,Segoe UI Emoji,NotoColorEmoji,Segoe UI Symbol,Android Emoji,EmojiSymbols;color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Times;font-size: medium\"><br>\n<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif,Apple Color Emoji,Segoe UI Emoji,NotoColorEmoji,Segoe UI Symbol,Android Emoji,EmojiSymbols;color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Times;font-size: medium\">If you are currently engaged in interdisciplinary research, planning to delve further into such work, or generally interested in the future of ecological research, we invite you to join us on <span class=\"aBn\" data-term=\"goog_1278665320\"><span class=\"aQJ\">Saturday, August 8<\/span><\/span> for a large working-group discussion on these and related topics.
