{"id":108,"date":"2012-11-16T23:28:16","date_gmt":"2012-11-16T23:28:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/esa.org\/enjustice2\/?page_id=108"},"modified":"2020-02-24T21:19:23","modified_gmt":"2020-02-24T21:19:23","slug":"esa-2012","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/esa.org\/enjustice\/meetings\/past-meetings\/esa-2012\/","title":{"rendered":"ESA 2012"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>Special Session #11: Identifying key research questions and theory associated with human and justice concerns<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Organizers:<\/strong> Charlie Nilon, Leanne Jablonski, Kellen Marshall-Gillespie &amp; George Middendorf<\/p>\n<p>In Special Session, participants worked to identify key research questions and common language to advance the discipline of ecology AND benefit human societal concerns.\u00a0 Speakers representing a breadth of the Sections (urban ecosystems ecology, human ecology, applied ecology, agro-ecology, traditional ecological knowledge, and environmental justice) presented summaries of core questions from the perspectives of their field, how they are currently being addressed, and proposed future directions.\u00a0 Through small group discussions, session participants also identified directions for enabling ecologists to address human and justice concerns in their research.<\/p>\n<p>Resources from the workshop include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/esa.org\/enjustice\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/28\/2012\/11\/2012-ESA_EJSpecialSession-EcoRschQues.pdf\">Session abstract, outline, and advance reading from sections<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Notes on small group discussions and large-group synthesis (coming soon)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Special Session #22: The Action Ecologist: Building the Ecologist\u2019s Guide to Working with Communities<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Organizers:<\/strong> Sara Gabrielson, Megan M. Gregory, Kellen Marshall-Gillespie, George Middendorf, Charlie Nilon, Beatriz Otero-Jim\u00e9nez, Ana Elisa P\u00e9rez-Quintero<\/p>\n<p>In this Special Session we discussed ongoing challenges, success stories and lessons learned from collaborations between ecologists and communities, with the goal of informing <a href=\"https:\/\/esa.org\/enjustice2\/?page_id=92\">efforts to create an<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/esa.org\/enjustice2\/?page_id=92\"><em>Ecologists\u2019 Guide to Working with Communities<\/em><\/a>.\u00a0 Participants brainstormed issues and challenges for community-based ecological research and education, and discussed potential formats for the <em>Guide<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Resources from the workshop include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A <a href=\"https:\/\/esa.org\/enjustice\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/28\/2012\/11\/2012-08-08-Ecologists-Guide_Issues-Challenges.pdf\">list of issues and challenges in community-based ecological research<\/a> produced by workshop participants.\u00a0 We are currently working with this list to define chapters for the Guide.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>A <a href=\"https:\/\/esa.org\/enjustice\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/28\/2012\/11\/2012-08-08-Ecologists-Guide_Practitioner-Profiles-Handout.pdf\">handout on the Practitioner Profile Project<\/a> discussed at the session.\u00a0 We plan to interview ecologists and community partners who have collaborated to enhance community well-being and environmental sustainability.\u00a0 From these interviews, we will construct detailed narratives or case studies of these community-research partnerships for inclusion in the <em>Guide<\/em>.\u00a0 Please contact us to recommend ecologists and community partners willing to participate, or to volunteer to help with transcription and editing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>Workshop #37 \u2013 Developing Together Ecology Curriculum for Community and School Urban Gardens<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Organizers:<\/strong> Ana Elisa P\u00e9rez-Quintero, Leanne M.
