The Bakersfield Field Office manages 612,000 acres of public lands in eight Central California counties that stretch from the California Coast to the crest of the Sierra Nevada range, as well as 450,000 acres of federal mineral estate. Public lands managed by the Bakersfield office include the quarter-million-acre Carrizo Plain National Monument, Piedras Blancas Light Station Outstanding Natural Area north of Cambria, San Joaquin River Gorge and the Atwell Island Land Retirement Demonstration Project located at Alpaugh, Tulare County.
