Send in your pitch for our public pub talk at the Ecological Society\u2019s 99th Annual Meeting this summer<\/h2>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Apply <a title=\"ESA2014 Science Cafe Prize\" href=\"https:\/\/esa.org\/esa\/?page_id=11111\">here<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Contest deadline<\/strong>: Friday, 30 May 2014<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_11130\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/zexsI\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11130\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-11130 img-fluid\" alt=\"De Vere's Irish Pub, 217 E Street, Davis, CA 95616\" src=\"https:\/\/esa.org\/esa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/de-Veres-street-view-screenshot-300x196.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"196\"><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-11130\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">De Vere\u2019s Irish Pub, 217 E Street, Davis, CA 95616<\/p><\/div>\n<p>At this year\u2019s <a title=\"#ESA2014 Sacramento meeting site\" href=\"https:\/\/esa.org\/am\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Annual Meeting in Sacramento<\/a>, California, ESA is partnering with Professor of Chemistry Jared Shaw and the UC <a title=\"Davis Science Cafe on Facebook\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/davissciencecafe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Davis Science\u00a0Caf\u00e9<\/a> series to present an informal public lecture (a \u201cScience Caf\u00e9\u201d) at <a title=\"de Vere's Irish Pub in Davis - website\" href=\"http:\/\/deverespub.com\/?loc=Davis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">de Vere\u2019s Pub<\/a>, in nearby Davis, California. De Vere\u2019s is, according to <a title=\"Pete Scully's de Vere's sketches\" href=\"http:\/\/petescully.com\/tag\/de-veres\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">local sources<\/a>, a nice pub \u201cwith a proper \u2018pub\u2019 feel\u201d and decent <a title=\"de Vere's flickr\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/deverespub\/sets\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">taps<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Davis is about <a title=\"Google Map: Sac Convention Center to de Vere's in Davis\" href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/zexsI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">15 miles<\/a> from the Sacramento Convention Center. (Why Davis: we decided to partner with an existing series rather than try advertise a stand-alone event. That series exists in Davis.) ESA will provide transportation for the speaker.<\/p>\n<p>To choose a speaker, we are reprising our successful 2013 pitch contest.<\/p>\n<p>Science Caf\u00e9s typically have an informal atmosphere and often put you within arms-reach of your audience. You can expect an audience that is interested, but not necessarily knowledgeable about ecology. They often arrive ready to ask questions, but you can ask them questions, too! Discussion is a goal. Props and activities involving the audience usually go over well. And, if you wish, you can give your presentation with <a title=\"Iowa State Univerisity's Lisa Schulte Moore explains &quot;why I did a Science Cafe.&quot;\" href=\"https:\/\/esa.org\/esablog\/ecology-and-society\/why-i-did-a-science-cafe-a-guest-post-by-lisa-schulte-moore\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">beverage in hand<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_9037\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/esa.org\/esablog-preprod\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/90\/2013\/07\/MacKenzie_SciCafe.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9037\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-9037  img-fluid\" alt=\"Same Data, Different Century. Sometimes I believe I was born to be a 19th century naturalist. Compiling long term records of flowering phenology involves stitching together old data (for example, this herbarium specimen from 1895) with new data (a phenology observation collected on a smartphone app in 2013). As I trek across Mount Desert Island in the 21st century, I am keenly aware of the naturalists who came before me; in my mind, I insert myself into the troupe of Harvard boys whose field notes and camp logs have become my baseline data. Cartoons, collages, photographs, and screenshots of raw data are all eligible imagery (as long as you have permission to use them). ESA will feature the winning pitch and honorable mentions here on<em> Ecotone<\/em> and on our homepage in the run up to the August meeting.
