It\u2019s that time of the year \u2013 time to get your brain into ESA Annual Meeting Mode.<\/p>\n

You\u2019re furiously finishing that data analysis in prep for a talk or poster.<\/p>\n

You\u2019re checking out the Conference Program<\/a> and getting your schedule in order.<\/p>\n

You\u2019re registering for the meeting and arranging meet-ups with colleagues and collaborators.<\/p>\n

How about adding science communication<\/i> to your meeting preparations? It\u2019s as simple as signing up for Workshop 15: <\/a>Beyond the written word \u2013 advancing ecology communication through multimedia<\/i><\/a>.<\/p>\n

Inspired by the rallying call at last year\u2019s Annual Meeting<\/a> to better connect our science to society, we\u2019ve organized a hands-on workshop<\/a> for attendees of this year\u2019s Annual Meeting. As we look towards ESA\u2019s Centennial<\/a>, we want to move the conversation forward from talking about why<\/i> communicating our science is important to improving how<\/i> we actually do it.<\/p>\n

Our workshop targets ecologists, educators, and communicators \u2013 those looking to expand their toolbox, and those curious to test the waters of science communication for the first time.<\/p>\n

During the five-hour workshop on Sunday, August 10<\/a>, you\u2019ll get a crash course in scientific storytelling using audio, video, text, photography, and illustration from a talented team of ecologist-communicators. We will first orient you to our favorite tools, software and apps \u2013 most of which you already carry around in your pocket or could download for free. Then, we\u2019ll lead you through hands-on exercises to gain confidence and expertise in each media.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s the most exciting part of the workshop: you\u2019ll form a small team with workshop presenters and other participants to plan and produce a multimedia project covering some aspect of the science at the meeting. We\u2019ll even provide a platform for you to share these multimedia pieces with the world: a special series published right here on the EcoTone<\/em> blog<\/a>.<\/p>\n

We\u2019re not looking for journalistic masterpieces, so everyone is welcome. We\u2019re empowering ecologists to better communicate the stories of our science (including stories about the people<\/i> doing the science) in creative, compelling and innovative ways. We will give you the tools \u2013 and confidence \u2013 to engage, communicate, and create!<\/p>\n
