Brewer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/esa.org\/esablog-preprod\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/90\/2016\/05\/Carol-Brewer-IMG_1290.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11546 img-fluid\" src=\"https:\/\/esa.org\/esablog-preprod\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/90\/2016\/05\/Carol-Brewer-IMG_1290.jpg\" alt=\"Carol Brewer\" width=\"2592\" height=\"1936\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Distinguished Service Citation recognizes long and distinguished volunteer service to the Ecological Society of America, the scientific community, and the larger purpose of ecology in the public welfare. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bioed.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Carol Brewer<\/a>, a professor emeritus at the University of Montana, has a long and distinguished record of service to the society\u00a0and to the broader science community, especially through her efforts in science and conservation education. She holds a B.S. in education as well as a B.A. in biology. In 1993, while still a doctoral student, the society asked her to be one of the campus leads for the new, NSF-supported \u201cSchoolyard Ecology for Elementary School Teachers (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nsf.gov\/awardsearch\/showAward?AWD_ID=9353362\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">SYEFEST<\/a>) project. Shortly after receiving her Ph.D., she served on ESA\u2019s Standing Committee on Education (1995\u201399) and became chair of the Education Section (1996\u201397).<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Brewer helped develop ESA\u2019s Education Office, now the highly successful <a href=\"https:\/\/esa.org\/esa\/education-and-diversity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Education and Diversity Office<\/a>. She served two terms as ESA\u2019s Vice-President for Education and Human Resources (2000\u20132006), chaired the Education and Human Resources Committee (2000\u20132006), and led ESA\u2019s survey of undergraduate ecology education. Most recently, she served as Program Chair for the society\u2019s 2015 Centennial Meeting in Baltimore, Md. Dr. Brewer is active in the Long Term Ecological Research network and was a founding member of the board of directors of the National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON). She co-founded the citizen science <a href=\"http:\/\/budburst.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Project Budburst<\/a> in 2007.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>ESA will present the 2016 awards during the 2016\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/esa.org\/ftlauderdale\/plenaries\/\">Annual Meeting<\/a> in Fort Lauderdale, Fl.
