But as in the case of the purported cane toad-eating frog, an exciting enough fact with weak empirical support can sometimes take off like\u2026.well, an invasive species.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.esajournals.org\/doi\/abs\/10.1890\/080081\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft img-fluid\" style=\"border: 2px solid black;margin: 10px;float: left\" src=\"http:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/thumb\/c\/cd\/Young_Bufo_marinus.jpg\/683px-Young_Bufo_marinus.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"259\" height=\"228\"><\/a>In 2005 and 2006, several media sources (including the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/stories\/2004\/12\/15\/1265310.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Australian Broadcasting Corporation<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/dna\/h2g2\/A12945017\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BBC<\/a>, and ESA\u2019s journal <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.esajournals.org\/doi\/pdf\/10.1890\/1540-9295(2005)003%5B0180%3AD%5D2.0.CO%3B2)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Frontiers in Ecology and the Environment<\/a><\/em>) reported that the native Australian Dahl\u2019s frog could survive after eating cane toad metamorphs, which are normally toxic to predators.\u00a0 The report was exciting because the invasive cane toads have wreaked havoc on Australia\u2019s ecosystems since their introduction in the 1930s, and this provided the first supposed evidence of a possible biocontrol to thwart the toads\u2019 spread. The finding, however, was reported by a community watch organizer who had fed metamorphs to five Dahl\u2019s frogs in a terrarium at his home.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">As Rick Shine and colleagues point out in a Dec. 10 e-view paper in <em>Frontiers<\/em>, titled \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.esajournals.org\/doi\/abs\/10.1890\/080081\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The myth of the toad-eating frog<\/a>,\u201d this finding was based on anecdotal evidence and lacked an appropriate sample size, control groups and replicated groups. The finding was not reviewed by scientists; indeed, even when reported in the media, no other scientists were contacted to comment on the story.\u00a0 In a bizarre twist, Shine also reported in his paper that at least one prominent ecologist retold the story, believing it was supported by scientific evidence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">When Shine and his colleagues tested the frog in a controlled setting with replication, randomization and appropriate sample sizes, they found that Dahl\u2019s frog is just as susceptible to cane toad toxin as other native species. More than half of frogs that ate the toad metamorphs in captivity died. Further, the frogs that tried to eat cane toad tadpoles spit them out and learned to avoid them in subsequent trials.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">So, who\u2019s responsible here? With today\u2019s ease of self-publishing, the lines between expert and self-proclaimed pundit blur, making it ever more important for journalists to validate the reliability of their sources.
