ESA\u2019s presence at OSM was <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW1339644 BCX8\">timely<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW1339644 BCX8\"> as the ESA Council had just approved the formation of a <strong>new section for coastal and marine ecology<\/strong>. <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW1339644 BCX8\">Many <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW1339644 BCX8\">OSM <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW1339644 BCX8\">attendees stopped by the booth, with unanimous enthusiasm <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW1339644 BCX8\">about the<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW1339644 BCX8\"> new section. <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW1339644 BCX8\">Several ESA members who visited the booth noted that they often felt like marine ecology was <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW1339644 BCX8\">not well-represented in the Society. As we told them, <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW1339644 BCX8\">let\u2019s<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW1339644 BCX8\"> change that! We hope that the formation of the new section <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW1339644 BCX8\">will make coastal and marine scientists feel <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW1339644 BCX8\">more <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW1339644 BCX8\">welcome at ESA and provide a forum for <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW1339644 BCX8\">organization of special sessions or other events at the ESA Annual Meeting. Sponberg also participated as a panelist for the Career Center event \u201cHow to get involved in Society Leadership\u201d.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW229559557 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-GB\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW229559557 BCX8\">OSM <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW229559557 BCX8\">also <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW229559557 BCX8\">provided<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW229559557 BCX8\">a great opportunity<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW229559557 BCX8\"> to<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW229559557 BCX8\">promote<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW229559557 BCX8\"> the ESA family of journals, <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW229559557 BCX8\">including<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW229559557 BCX8\"> ESA\u2019s newest <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW229559557 BCX8\">fully open-access <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW229559557 BCX8\">journal, <\/span><\/span><em><span class=\"TextRun SCXW229559557 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-GB\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW229559557 BCX8\">Earth Stewardship<\/span><\/span><\/em><span class=\"TextRun SCXW229559557 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-GB\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW229559557 BCX8\">. With a focus on<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW229559557 BCX8\">social-environmental challenges of the Anthropocene<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW229559557 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-GB\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW229559557 BCX8\">,<\/span><em><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW229559557 BCX8\"> Earth Stewardship<\/span><\/em><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW229559557 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-GB\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW229559557 BCX8\"> will offer a novel and much-needed transdisciplinary platform to tackle these challenges at multiple scales<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW229559557 BCX8\">. <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW229559557 BCX8\">With<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW229559557 BCX8\">n<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW229559557 BCX8\">early 40%<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW229559557 BCX8\"> of Americans <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW229559557 BCX8\">already in residence and<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW229559557 BCX8\"> the highest rate of population change<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW229559557 BCX8\"> on our coasts, marine and coastal ecology has a lot to contribute to <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW229559557 BCX8\">the<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW229559557 BCX8\"> broader understanding of the socio<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW229559557 BCX8\">-ecological challenges<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW229559557 BCX8\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW229559557 BCX8\" data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Adrienne Sponberg ESA recently joined more than\u00a06,000 ocean scientists from around the world at the bi-annual Ocean Sciences Meeting (OSM) in New Orleans.
