ESA recently joined more than<\/span>\u00a06<\/span>,000 ocean scientists from <\/span>around the world<\/span> at <\/span>the bi-annual Ocean Sciences Meeting<\/span> (OSM)<\/span> in New Orleans<\/span>. <\/span>OSM is a joint meeting between the American Geophysical Union, Association for the Sciences of Limnology and Oceanography and the Ocea<\/span>nography Society.<\/span><\/p>\n

Executive Director Catherine O\u2019Riordan and Director of Society Programs Adrienne Sponberg<\/span> staffed the ESA<\/span> booth<\/span> at the exhibit hall<\/span>. ESA\u2019s presence at OSM was <\/span>timely<\/span> as the ESA Council had just approved the formation of a new section for coastal and marine ecology<\/strong>. <\/span>Many <\/span>OSM <\/span>attendees stopped by the booth, with unanimous enthusiasm <\/span>about the<\/span> new section. <\/span>Several ESA members who visited the booth noted that they often felt like marine ecology was <\/span>not well-represented in the Society. As we told them, <\/span>let\u2019s<\/span> change that! We hope that the formation of the new section <\/span>will make coastal and marine scientists feel <\/span>more <\/span>welcome at ESA and provide a forum for <\/span>organization of special sessions or other events at the ESA Annual Meeting. Both the 2024 and 2025 meetings are in coastal locations, so the time is right!<\/span><\/p>\n

OSM <\/span>also <\/span>provided<\/span> a great opportunity<\/span> to<\/span> promote<\/span> the ESA family of journals, <\/span>including<\/span> ESA\u2019s newest <\/span>fully open-access <\/span>journal, <\/span><\/span>Earth Stewardship<\/span><\/span><\/em>. With a focus on<\/span> social-environmental challenges of the Anthropocene<\/span><\/span>,<\/span> Earth Stewardship<\/span><\/em><\/span> will offer a novel and much-needed transdisciplinary platform to tackle these challenges at multiple scales<\/span>. <\/span>With<\/span> n<\/span>early 40%<\/span> of Americans <\/span>already in residence and<\/span> the highest rate of population change<\/span> on our coasts, marine and coastal ecology has a lot to contribute to <\/span>the<\/span> broader understanding of the socio<\/span>-ecological challenges<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
