{"id":2383,"date":"2009-12-30T10:38:36","date_gmt":"2009-12-30T14:38:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/esa.org\/esablog\/?p=2383"},"modified":"2009-12-30T10:38:36","modified_gmt":"2009-12-30T14:38:36","slug":"indulging-in-wasteful-eating-habits","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/esa.org\/esablog\/2009\/12\/30\/indulging-in-wasteful-eating-habits\/","title":{"rendered":"Indulging in wasteful eating habits"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #000000\"><a href=\"https:\/\/esa.org\/esablog-preprod\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/90\/2009\/12\/cornucopia.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-3445 img-fluid\" title=\"cornucopia\" src=\"https:\/\/esa.org\/esablog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/cornucopia-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"253\" height=\"248\"><\/a>As many of us once again rouse ourselves from festivities filled with an overabundance of food, it might be sombering to ponder that a recent PLoS ONE <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.plosone.org\/article\/info%3Adoi%2F10.1371%2Fjournal.pone.0007940\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000\"> suggests that nearly 40 percent of food in the United States is wasted.\u00a0 As noted in a recent <em>Science<\/em>NOW <a href=\"http:\/\/sciencenow.sciencemag.org\/cgi\/content\/full\/2009\/1125\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">article<\/a>, physiologist Kevin Hall and mathematician Carson Chow, both at the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www2.niddk.nih.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">NIDDK<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000\">), calculated the energy content of nationwide food waste from the difference between the US food supply and the food consumed by the population.\u00a0 They used a mathematical model of metabolism relating body weight to amount of food eaten.\u00a0 The result: in 2003, 1450 calories per capita, or 39 percent of available food\u00a0was wasted.\u00a0 The <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ers.usda.gov\/Publications\/FoodReview\/Jan1997\/jan97a.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">U.S. Department of Agriculture <\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000\">puts the figure at 27 percent, based on interviews with consumers and producers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">The authors point out that in addition to the food itself, freshwater used to grow food and fossil fuels used to transport it are also wasted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">The <em>Science<\/em>NOW article quotes Greg Keoleian, Co-Director of the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/css.snre.umich.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">Center for Sustainable Systems <\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000\">as saying:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">If it [food] was more expensive, waste would be reduced.\u00a0 Waste and overconsumption is the key issue affecting the sustainability of the U.S. food system.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">Makes me think a good New Year\u2019s resolution might be to be more vigilant about using what\u2019s already in the \u2018fridge and pantry before running out to buy more food.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"Z3988\" title=\"ctx_ver=Z39.88-2004&amp;rft_val_fmt=info%3Aofi%2Ffmt%3Akev%3Amtx%3Ajournal&amp;rft.jtitle=PLoS+ONE&amp;rft_id=info%3Adoi%2F10.1371%2Fjournal.pone.0007940&amp;rfr_id=info%3Asid%2Fresearchblogging.org&amp;rft.atitle=The+Progressive+Increase+of+Food+Waste+in+America+and+Its+Environmental+Impact&amp;rft.issn=1932-6203&amp;rft.date=2009&amp;rft.volume=4&amp;rft.issue=11&amp;rft.spage=0&amp;rft.epage=&amp;rft.artnum=http%3A%2F%2Fdx.plos.org%2F10.1371%2Fjournal.pone.0007940&amp;rft.au=Hall%2C+K.&amp;rft.au=Guo%2C+J.&amp;rft.au=Dore%2C+M.&amp;rft.au=Chow%2C+C.&amp;rfe_dat=bpr3.included=1;bpr3.tags=Biology%2CEcology%2C+Agriculture\">Hall, K., Guo, J., Dore, M., &amp; Chow, C.
