Scientists, reporters, policymakers, filmmakers\u2026all across the globe, people are talking about the 40th<\/sup> Anniversary of Earth Day. Here is what they have been saying:<\/span><\/p>\n

Agencies such as <\/span>NOAA<\/span><\/a> and the <\/span>EPA<\/span><\/a> call for Americans to take action by conserving water, recycling, being \u201c<\/span>seafood savvy<\/span><\/a>\u201d and getting involved with the <\/span>White House<\/span><\/a>\u2019s Earth Day efforts; while <\/span>NRDC<\/span><\/a> provides four reasons to celebrate.<\/span><\/p>\n

Conservation groups are using the arts to inspire Earth appreciation. The International League of Conservation Photographers, for example, is honoring the day with the <\/span>Top Forty Nature Photographs<\/span><\/a> of all time, including classic <\/span>Ansel Adams<\/span><\/a> and innovative <\/span>Paul Nicklen<\/span><\/a> photos. In addition, <\/span>The Nature Conservancy<\/span><\/a> has posted recipes and tips from Chef Mario Batali on cooking with sustainable seafood.<\/span><\/p>\n

Scientific American<\/span><\/a> and other sites are joining in with a mash-up of articles, podcasts, videos and other media to share perspectives on the planet\u2019s health, such as an <\/span>audio slideshow<\/span><\/a> describing human-ecosystem interactions.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/span><\/a>The Washington Post<\/span><\/a> is also pulling together Earth Day from all angles. There are <\/span>photos<\/span><\/a> of current planetary events, Earth Day\u2019s <\/span>mid-life crisis<\/span><\/a> (<\/span>Politico<\/span><\/a> also comments on this), a <\/span>video montage<\/span><\/a> of the history of Earth Day in Washington, a <\/span>where-are-they-now<\/span><\/a> of the leaders of the first Earth Day, and for those of you in the DC-area, The Post has even included a <\/span>going-out guide<\/span><\/a> (this primarily features the climate rally on <\/span>the National Mall<\/span><\/a> with musicians such as Sting and The Roots).<\/span><\/p>\n

Some people are viewing Earth Day from a business perspective: a <\/span>Forbes<\/span><\/a> blogger comments on genetic engineering for improving the environment and the economy, and <\/span>The New York Times<\/span><\/a> discusses the \u201cbig business\u201d of Earth Day.<\/span><\/p>\n

In international news, a reporter from the <\/span>Telegraph<\/span><\/a> provides a list of environmental disasters predicted for the year of the first Earth day (1970), and <\/span>the National Post<\/span><\/a> (Canada) focuses on the popularity (and in some instances irony) of Earth Day (as a side note, Toronto will tint the <\/span>CN Tower<\/span><\/a> green later today). <\/span>CNN<\/span><\/a> provides a run-down of the planet-wide movement.<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition to James Cameron debuting <\/span>Avatar<\/span><\/a> to DVD today, there is an interview with Robert Stone, director of <\/span>Earth Days<\/span><\/a>, on the blog <\/span>Dot Earth<\/span><\/a>. On the technology front, <\/span>Mashable<\/span><\/a> lists ten free iPhone apps for \u201cgoing green\u201d and Google\u2019s Earth Day doodle is of the <\/span>rainforest<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n
