He presented the site in Antarctica as \u201ca hive of industrial activity centered around an $8 million drill. Periodically,\u201d he continued, \u201cthis drill, like a biopsy needle, plunges thousands of feet deep into the ice to extract the marrow of gas and isotopes for analysis.\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ted.com\/talks\/lee_hotz_inside_an_antarctic_time_machine.html\">Read more<\/a> at \u201cLee Hotz: Inside an Antarctic time machine.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\"><strong>Whispering bats:<\/strong> According to Holger Goerlitz of the University of Bristol in a study published online in <em>Current Biology<\/em>, western barbastelle bats in Europe have evolved to use stealthier tactics of catching moths\u2014that is, quieter echolocation\u2014compared with other bat species. As Susan Milius of <em>Science News<\/em> explained, these findings show one of the benefits of bat research: \u201cThe battle between bats and moths has become a classic system for studying the evolution of predators and their prey.\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.sciencenews.org\/view\/generic\/id\/62451\/title\/Whispering_gives_bats_the_drop_on_prey\">Read more<\/a> at \u201c\u2019Whispering\u2019 gives bats the drop on prey.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\"><strong>Communicating ecology:<\/strong> It is relatively well-known that science and public outreach complement one another; however, during times of environmental controversy, it is even more important for researchers to engage in science communication. At least that is the topic Matthew Nisbet from American University discussed in a <em>Big Think<\/em> article last week in which he also interviewed Peter Groffman, a microbiologist at the Cary Institute for Ecosystem Studies, on the challenges of bridging ecology and society. Both Nisbet and Groffman addressed these issues in this month\u2019s special <a href=\"http:\/\/www.esajournals.org\/toc\/fron\/8\/6\">edition<\/a> of <em>Frontiers in Ecology and the Environment<\/em>. <a href=\"http:\/\/bigthink.com\/ideas\/22870\">Read more<\/a> at \u201cEcologist Says Scientists Need to Re-Evaluate Approach to Communication\u201d or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.frontiersinecology.org\/beyond\/?p=220\">listen<\/a> to an interview.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\"><strong>The life of a terror bird:<\/strong> Stephen Wroe from the University of New South Wales in Sydney investigated the predation technique of the extinct <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Phorusrhacidae\">terror bird<\/a> <em>Andalgalornis <\/em>using finite element analysis\u2014a process that recreates the strength, flexibility and structure of animal skulls with medical scanners (see above). As Ed Yong outlined in <em>Not Exactly Rocket Science<\/em>, Wroe found that \u201cif the bird tried to subdue a struggling victim, its beak would probably have snapped under the strain. So despite its size, <em>Andalgalornis<\/em> probably danced around its prey, advancing and retreating while dispatching it with quick, well-aimed strikes\u2014more Muhammad Ali than George Foreman.\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.discovermagazine.com\/notrocketscience\/2010\/08\/18\/float-like-a-butterfly-sting-like-a-terror-bird\/\">Read more<\/a> at \u201cFloat like a butterfly, sting like a terror bird.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\"><strong>Garbage patch mapping:<\/strong> \u201cScientists have gathered data from 22 years of surface net tows to map the North Atlantic garbage patch and its change over time, creating the most accurate picture yet of any pelagic plastic patch on earth,\u201d wrote Jess McNally in a <em>Wired Science<\/em> article last week. That is, researchers gathered thousands of data on the location, size and distribution of the tiny, unseen bits of garbage known to be floating the Atlantic Ocean.
