Squirrels are well-known examples, but researchers have recently tracked a species of frugivorous\u2014that is, fruit-eating\u2014piranha in the Amazon that distribute seeds over more than five kilometers of flood plains. As Daniel Cressey described in a <em>Nature News<\/em> <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.com\/news\/2011\/110323\/full\/news.2011.177.html\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">article<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000\">, \u201cAlthough fish have long been suspected of having an important role in seed distribution, proof of their ability to carry fertile seeds such distances has been lacking.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">Ecologist Jill Anderson from Duke University and colleagues tracked the fish <em>Colossoma macropomum<\/em>\u2014also called a tambaqui or pacu\u2014during three flood seasons<em> <\/em>in Peru\u2019s Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve. As they reported in a <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/rspb.royalsocietypublishing.org\/content\/early\/2011\/03\/16\/rspb.2011.0155\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">paper<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000\"> published today in <em>Proceedings of the Royal Society Biological Sciences<\/em>, these fish are dispersing seeds at some of the greatest distances ever reported by frugivores. And because the seeds are dispersed in flood plains, they have a good chance of germination once the waters recede. Ed Yong reported in <em>Discover<\/em>\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.discovermagazine.com\/notrocketscience\/2011\/03\/22\/vegetarian-piranhas-are-the-amazon%E2%80%99s-champion-gardeners\/\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">blog<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000\"> <em>Not Exactly Rocket Science<\/em> that \u201cseeds find it <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.springerlink.com\/content\/yxu965vujn0bfhcm\/\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">slightly easier to germinate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000\"> after a voyage through the tambaqui\u2019s innards.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">By tracking these fish, Anderson also found evidence that the populations are depleted due to overfishing. That is, she was unable to find any fish close to maximum size within the three seasons she was tracking them. As Yong concluded his <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.discovermagazine.com\/notrocketscience\/2011\/03\/22\/vegetarian-piranhas-are-the-amazon%E2%80%99s-champion-gardeners\/\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">post<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000\">, \u201cOther species of fruit-eating fish are facing similar problems. So fishermen are not only depriving the Amazon of some of its most effective seed dispersers, they are also taking the best carriers out of the game. In doing so, they are disrupting alliances between fish and plants that have been going on for millions years.
