{"id":5871,"date":"2011-09-16T11:49:00","date_gmt":"2011-09-16T15:49:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/esa.org\/esablog\/?p=5871"},"modified":"2011-09-16T11:49:00","modified_gmt":"2011-09-16T15:49:00","slug":"esa-gives-environmental-offset-donation-to-bat-and-wildflower-organizations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/esa.org\/esablog\/2011\/09\/16\/esa-gives-environmental-offset-donation-to-bat-and-wildflower-organizations\/","title":{"rendered":"ESA gives environmental offset donation to bat and wildflower organizations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left\"><a href=\"https:\/\/esa.org\/esablog-preprod\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/90\/2011\/09\/WhiteNoseSyndrome071.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5877 img-fluid\" style=\"margin-top: 6px;margin-bottom: 6px\" title=\"Little brown bats with white-nose syndrome\" src=\"https:\/\/esa.org\/esablog-preprod\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/90\/2011\/09\/WhiteNoseSyndrome071.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"276\" srcset=\"https:\/\/esa.org\/esablog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/90\/2011\/09\/WhiteNoseSyndrome071.jpg 600w, https:\/\/esa.org\/esablog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/90\/2011\/09\/WhiteNoseSyndrome071-300x138.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a>When 3,500 individuals from across the country and around the globe convene for a scientific conference such as the Ecological Society of America\u2019s (ESA) recent meeting in Austin, Texas, it takes a toll on the environment.\u00a0 There is the carbon footprint from the various modes of travel to get to the meeting.\u00a0 But there is also the broader environmental cost of the habitat loss and the wildlife displacement that occurred to build a convention center and nearby hotels, the structures which make such a meeting possible.<\/p>\n<p>As one way to offset this environmental cost, ESA contributes $5 for each registrant at its annual meeting to an environmental offset contribution which it donates to a local project or organization in the city in which it meets.\u00a0 This year, the Society gave $9,230 each to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.batcon.org\/index.php\/what-we-do.html\">Bat Conservation International<\/a> (BCI) and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wildflower.org\/about\/\">Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center<\/a>, both located in Austin.<\/p>\n<p>BCI supports bat conservation worldwide, offering grants and scholarships, monitoring bat populations and caves, protecting bats colonies in abandoned mines, and supporting educational outreach.\u00a0 Austin is a logical home for the organization since the city boasts North America\u2019s largest urban bat colony, which lives under Congress Avenue Bridge.\u00a0 BCI plans to put ESA\u2019s donation towards protecting bats from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fws.gov\/northeast\/pdf\/white-nosefaqs.pdf\">White-nose syndrome<\/a>, wind power and other threats. <a href=\"https:\/\/esa.org\/esablog-preprod\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/90\/2011\/09\/Wildflowers-in-Austin1.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-5878 img-fluid\" style=\"margin-top: 6px;margin-bottom: 6px\" title=\"Wildflowers in Austin\" src=\"https:\/\/esa.org\/esablog-preprod\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/90\/2011\/09\/Wildflowers-in-Austin1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"181\" height=\"135\" srcset=\"https:\/\/esa.org\/esablog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/90\/2011\/09\/Wildflowers-in-Austin1.jpg 500w, https:\/\/esa.org\/esablog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/90\/2011\/09\/Wildflowers-in-Austin1-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 181px) 100vw, 181px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The mission of the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center is to \u201cincrease the sustainable use and conservation of native wildflowers, plants and landscapes.\u201d\u00a0 Among its activities are hosting ecological research, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wildflower.org\/msb\/\">collecting and storing seeds<\/a> of native plants, and hosting an online database of over 7,200 native plant species through its <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wildflower.org\/plants\/\">Native Plant Information Network<\/a>.
