They are becoming more common. Over the last few years, earthquakes in the magnitude 3-6 range have increased in frequency, and people are starting to notice. In 2011, 134 quakes of magnitude 3 or higher shook central North America, up from 87\u00a0 in 2010 and 50 in 2009.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, USGS geologist Bill Ellsworth linked the increasing incidence of quakes to oil and gas production. He told the Seismological Society of America meeting in San Diego that forcing wastewater deep underground appears to be triggering earthquakes. \u00a0An abstract posted to the meeting site stated that <a title=\"Are Seismicity Rate Changes in the Midcontinent Natural or Manmade? SSN 2012 Session: The M5.8 Central Virginia and the M5.6 Oklahoma Earthquakes of 2011. Wednesday, April 18th \/ 3:45 PM Oral \/ Pacific Salon 4 &amp; 5\" href=\"http:\/\/www2.seismosoc.org\/FMPro?-db=Abstract_Submission_12&amp;-sortfield=PresDay&amp;-sortorder=ascending&amp;-sortfield=Special+Session+Name+Calc&amp;-sortorder=ascending&amp;-sortfield=PresTimeSort&amp;-sortorder=ascending&amp;-op=gt&amp;PresStatus=0&amp;-lop=and&amp;-token.1=ShowSession&amp;-tok\">\u201cthe seismicity rate changes described here are almost certainly manmade,\u201d<\/a> triggering a wave of news reports. Many headlines erroneously implied that hydraulic fracturing (\u201cfracking\u201d) of shale rock for natural gas production directly triggers earthquakes.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Evans, D. M. (1969), Fluid pressure and earthquakes, Eos Trans. AGU, 50(5), 387, doi:10.1029\/EO050i005p00387.\" href=\"http:\/\/www.agu.org\/pubs\/crossref\/1969\/EO050i005p00387.shtml\">Earthquakes are a known hazard of deep wastewater injection wells<\/a>. Geologists and engineers discovered the complication in the 1960s, when injections of <a title='\"Basin F\"' href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Basin_F\">contaminated water<\/a> from a big surface reservoir into a 12,000 ft deep well at the <a title=\"Army fact sheet\" href=\"http:\/\/www.rma.army.mil\/cleanup\/facts\/deep-wel.html\">Rocky Mountain Arsenal<\/a> chemical munitions plant triggered a series of over 700 earthquakes in the Denver area. Not all deep injection wells trigger earthquakes, but if they are in the vicinity of a fault, the increasing fluid pressure in the pores of the rock can relieve the friction resisting slippage (<del><\/del>strain) between the rock layers. It accelerates the timetable on a jolting slip in the fault. The effect is accentuated if fluid is pumped in fast. It takes time for the liquid to disperse and pressure to return to equilibrium (hydrostatic pressure), and in the meantime, the dynamically heightened pore pressure opposes the weight of the rock on top, \u201c<a title=\"the landslide situation is somewhat analogous\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/File:Slopesyst2.jpg\">floating\u201d it.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Surface reservoirs, flooded mines, extraction of large amounts of oil, gas or ore, and <a title='\"Quake Threat Leads Swiss to Close Geothermal Project.\" James Glanz, NY Times December 10, 2009 ' href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2009\/12\/11\/science\/earth\/11basel.html?_r=1\">geothermal<\/a> energy projects can also stimulate earthquakes. \u201cManmade\u201d earthquakes, it turns out, are not a novelty at all.<\/p>\n<p>Fracking is in the hot seat because the method has expanded so rapidly and successfully in the last decade. The process uses a lot of water. Ecologists have pointed out <a title=\"Rapid expansion of natural gas development poses a threat to surface waters\" href=\"https:\/\/esa.org\/pao\/pressreleases.php?uid=102011\">potential risks to surface water quality<\/a>, and the void of empirical data on impacts. Fracking forces water (mixed with proprietary additives, some of which are fairly nasty) horizontally through shale rock to open pores, releasing natural gas. \u00a0Some 25-50 percent of the fluid returns to the surface and must be safely disposed of if it isn\u2019t recycled. Deep injection wells are a popular solution.<\/p>\n<p>Other types of oil and natural gas production also discharge waste water. Extraction of <a title=\"coalbed methane backgrounder\" href=\"http:\/\/www.groundtruthtrekking.org\/Issues\/AlaskaOilandGas\/CoalbedMethane.html\">coal bed methane<\/a>, which brings up plenty of water along with the gas, triggered the quakes in the Raton Basin along the Colorado-New Mexico border that Ellsworth <em>et al.<\/em> mention in their abstract.<\/p>\n<p>The fracking process itself has caused a few, extremely rare, micro-earthquakes, but there is no indication that it contributes to the increased seismic activity observed by Ellsworth and his team \u2013 until fracking wastewater is injected in deeper wells, which, in a minority of cases and given the right geologic conditions, does trigger quakes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to do the basic science to address the problem,\u201d writes Virginia Tech <a title=\"http:\/\/clasticdetritus.com\/2012\/04\/18\/fluid-injection-and-seismicity\/#comments\" href=\"http:\/\/clasticdetritus.com\/2012\/04\/18\/fluid-injection-and-seismicity\/#comments\">geologist Brian Romans on his blog <em>Clastic Detritus<\/em><\/a>. \u201cAnd I don\u2019t care if it\u2019s advocacy for or against natural gas extraction, either loses credibility if specifics about the science are distorted, cherry-picked, or omitted.
