Genome Biology 2009 10:R141 doi:10.1186\/gb-2009-10-12-r141<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Last week, a <a title=\"an infographic of North America's periodic cicadas\" href=\"http:\/\/cicadas.newscientistapps.com\/\">cicada-like re-emergence<\/a> of \u201cBell Curve\u201d claims of a genetic determinacy between intelligence and race surfaced in a <a title=\"Special Report #133 on Immigration, May 6, 2013. \u201cThe Fiscal Cost of Unlawful Immigrants and Amnesty to the U.S. Taxpayer.\u201d Robert Rector and Jason Richwine, Ph.D.\" href=\"http:\/\/www.heritage.org\/research\/reports\/2013\/05\/the-fiscal-cost-of-unlawful-immigrants-and-amnesty%20to-the-us-taxpayer\">Heritage Foundation special report<\/a> on immigration. The report drew on Jason Richwine\u2019s Harvard dissertation, \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.scribd.com\/doc\/140239668\/IQ-and-Immigration-Policy-Jason-Richwine\">IQ and Immigration Policy<\/a>.\u201d Amid the furor, the <i>Atlantic\u2019s<\/i> Ta Nehisi Coates was ready with the history. He <a title='\"The Dark Art of Racecraft\" 13 May 2013' href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/national\/archive\/2013\/05\/the-dark-art-of-racecraft\/275783\/\">wrote in response to Richwine\u2019s apologists<\/a>, who were arguing that science must boldly investigate taboo topics in the face of social pressure:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIt is almost as though the \u201cdark arts of race and IQ\u201d were an untapped field of potential knowledge, not one of the most discredited fields of study in modern history.\u00a0We should first be clear that there is nothing mysterious or forbidden about purporting to study race and intelligence. Indeed, despite an inability to define \u201crace\u201d or \u201cintelligence,\u201d such studies are one of the dominant intellectual strains in Western history,\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>For those who are unfamiliar with that history, Coates provides a crib sheet.<\/p>\n<p>Coates <a title='\"Race, Intelligence, and Genetics For Curious Dummies\" 23 May 2013' href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/national\/archive\/2013\/05\/race-intelligence-and-genetics-for-curious-dummies\/276154\/\">asked a geneticist<\/a> to bring the scientific perspective to the table. In essence, Neil Risch, director of the Institute\u00a0for Human Genetics at University of California San Francisco, agrees that race and intelligence are fuzzy concepts; race is a very imperfect proxy for ancestry, as IQ is a slippery proxy for certain kinds of intelligence. Correlations between IQ and race are not convincing evidence of underlying biology. The social and environmental differences between the groups we define as races have more influence than the genetic differences.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><b>One last question. Your paper on assessing genetic contributions to phenotype, seemed skeptical that we would ever tease out a group-wide genetic component when looking at things like cognitive skills or personality disposition. Am I reading that right?
