Schulte Moore, a professor of <a title=\"Lisa's lab page\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nrem.iastate.edu\/landscape\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">landscape ecology at Iowa State University<\/a>, will speak at the <a title=\"Science Cafe details\" href=\"https:\/\/esa.org\/esa\/?page_id=7640\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Aster<\/a> Cafe on the riverfront in Minneapolis, Minnesota during ESA\u2019s annual meeting in August. Photo, Dave Williams.<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p>Want to stem biodiversity loss, enhance fresh water supplies, curtail climate change AND improve people\u2019s lives?\u00a0 Then change modern agriculture.\u00a0 Worldwide, agriculture is responsible for more habitat conversion, water pollution, and global warming potential than any other sector of the economy.\u00a0 Furthermore, the current system of food production fails to provide adequate nourishment for one-seventh of the planet\u2019s human inhabitants.\u00a0 Where do we begin this monumental task?\u00a0 Iowa, USA.<\/p>\n<p>Iowa\u2019s status as the leading producer of corn, soy, pork, and eggs and first-in-the-nation caucuses means the state has disproportionate influence on US farm bills\u00a0\u2014 legislation that delivers food aid to the needy, incentivizes farming practices, and provides the bulk of conservation funding nationwide.\u00a0 While focused within the nation\u2019s borders, farm bill legislation has a global ripple effect by tipping the economic playing field.\u00a0 Thus, I posit, if you make a better Iowa, you make a better world.\u00a0 How do we do that?\u00a0 With perennials and partnerships.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Want to stem biodiversity loss, enhance fresh water supplies, curtail climate change AND improve people&#8217;s lives?
