We\u2019ve had\u00a0 some great Opening Plenary speakers over the years including Jane Lubchenco, David Suzuki, Don Kennedy, Sandra Postel, Cristian Samper and many others who inspired us and set the tone for the meeting.<\/p>\n<p>Last summer\u2019s speaker, <a href=\"https:\/\/esa.org\/minneapolis\/plenary.php\">Jon Foley<\/a>, drew a large and vocal crowd in Minneapolis. Foley, a Saint Paul local, is active in the University of Minnesota\u2019s public outreach director of the <a href=\"http:\/\/environment.umn.edu\/\">Institute on the Environment<\/a>. He spoke about prospects for feeding the world in a future of global change, arguing passionately for the interdependence of human and environmental health and wellbeing. His presentation nicely introduced the meeting theme of \u201cSustainable Pathways: Learning from the Past and Shaping the Future\u201d \u2014 and ignited some equally passionate discussions.<\/p>\n<p>Next August, ESA\u2019s <a title=\"#ESA2014 Sacramento meeting site\" href=\"https:\/\/esa.org\/am\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">99th Annual Meeting<\/a> will be held in\u00a0 Sacramento, CA, with the theme of \u201cFrom Mountains to Oceans, it\u2019s all Ecology.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/esa.org\/esa\/?page_id=744\">Public Affairs Committee<\/a> has suggested focusing the upcoming Opening Plenary on agriculture, water use and policy, or coastal ecosystems, all of which are consuming economic, social, and environmental issues in California. We invited members to <a href=\"https:\/\/esa.org\/esablog\/public-service-announcements\/crowdsourcing-the-esa2014-opening-plenary\/\">vote<\/a> on\u00a0 <em>EcoTone<\/em> for their favorite\u00a0 topic last August (about 50 people voted; water was the most popular).<\/p>\n<p>But we are not limiting you to those topics \u2014 this is an open call. Who would you like to see as the 2014 Opening Plenary speaker?\u00a0 We\u2019re looking for someone (s\/he doesn\u2019t need to be an ecologist) who may move, inspire, provoke or motivate us and whose insights need to be heard by our community.<\/p>\n<p>ESA doesn\u2019t pay speaker fees but we\u2019ve managed to attract impressive folks in the past.<\/p>\n<p>If you have suggestions, please\u00a0 leave a comment or drop us an email at pao@esa.org<\/p>\n<p>The Public Affairs Committee will select their top choices during the first week of January, so think about getting your nominations in before the end-of-year holidays!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Do you have ideas for next year\u2019s 2014 Ecological Society of America Opening Plenary?
