Authors must deposit data that they discuss in the results of their research reports in a permanent, publicly accessible data archive or repository before publication of the manuscript.<\/p>\n<p>ESA recognizes the need to protect the privacy of human subjects and the locations of rare, threatened, or endangered species. Editors will work with authors to appropriately redact sensitive information.<\/p>\n<p>Read the data policy for <i>Ecological Applications<\/i> <a href=\"http:\/\/esapubs.org\/esapubs\/ecapTypes.htm#Dat\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/knb.ecoinformatics.org\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-9854 img-fluid\" alt=\"Knowledge Network for Biocomplexity (KNB)\" src=\"https:\/\/esa.org\/esablog-preprod\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/90\/2014\/02\/KNBLogo-1.jpg\" width=\"52\" height=\"50\"><\/a>Archiving of data prior to research publication allows the journal to permanently link the data and the paper. Repositories such as <a href=\"http:\/\/datadryad.org\/pages\/faq#using\">Dryad<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/esapubs.org\/archive\/default.htm\">Ecological Archives<\/a>, and the University of Illinois\u2019 <a title=\"U of Illinois IDEALS\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ideals.illinois.edu\/\">IDEALS<\/a> assign Digital Object Identifiers (DOI) or other unique identifiers to deposited datasets. Secondary users of the data can (and <a title=\"Whitlock, M. Data archiving in ecology and evolution: best practices. Trends in Ecology &amp; Evolution, Volume 26, Issue 2, 61-65, 14 December 2010\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cell.com\/trends\/ecology-evolution\/retrieve\/pii\/S0169534710002697?_returnURL=http:\/\/linkinghub.elsevier.com\/retrieve\/pii\/S0169534710002697?showall=true\">should<\/a>) cite the original paper and the dataset itself.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.datadryad.org\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-9855 img-fluid\" alt=\"Dryad\" src=\"https:\/\/esa.org\/esablog-preprod\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/90\/2014\/02\/DryadLogo-1.jpg\" width=\"80\" height=\"50\"><\/a>ESA expects authors in all ESA journals to <a title=\"ESA Data Policy\" href=\"http:\/\/esapubs.org\/esapubs\/DataReg.htm\">share data<\/a> fundamental to their research articles, and encourages deposition in public archives. A 2004 <a title=\"2005. Society Summit on Data Sharing and Archiving Policies. Bulletin of the Ecological Society of America 86:61\u201364\" href=\"http:\/\/www.esajournals.org\/doi\/pdf\/10.1890\/0012-9623%282005%2986%5B61%3ASSODSA%5D2.0.CO%3B2\">summit<\/a> (pdf) convened by ESA of ecological, evolutionary and organismal biology societies concluded that sponsoring data access through archives was in the best interest of science and society, citing the benefits of reinterpretation of data, smoothing cross-discipline collaborations, and enhancement of existing datasets. But, prior to 2014, only <i><a title=\"Data policy for Ecological Monographs\" href=\"http:\/\/esapubs.org\/esapubs\/emonTypes.htm#Dat\">Ecological Monographs<\/a><\/i> mandated public data deposition.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lternet.edu\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-9857 alignleft img-fluid\" alt=\"LTER data co-op\" src=\"https:\/\/esa.org\/esablog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Lter-datadrop-logo-237x300.jpg\" width=\"59\" height=\"76\" srcset=\"https:\/\/esa.org\/esablog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/90\/2014\/02\/Lter-datadrop-logo-237x300.jpg 237w, https:\/\/esa.org\/esablog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/90\/2014\/02\/Lter-datadrop-logo-300x380.jpg 300w, https:\/\/esa.org\/esablog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/90\/2014\/02\/Lter-datadrop-logo.jpg 696w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 59px) 100vw, 59px\" \/><\/a>The editorial board of <i>Ecological Applications<\/i> discussed data sharing requirements intensively for three years before instituting the policy change, considering the demand for the creation of large, synthetic datasets from small, detailed studies (for Big Ecology projects like those in the February <a title=\"Frontiers in Ecology and the Environment Volume 12, Issue 1 (February 2014)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.esajournals.org\/toc\/fron\/12\/1\">Macrosystems Ecology<\/a> special issue of ESA <i>Frontiers<\/i>), and the public interest in replication and adaptation of results. Repositories also, they felt, had the potential to help the data collectors gain recognition for their work.<\/p>\n<p>In an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.esajournals.org\/doi\/abs\/10.1890\/1051-0761-24.1.1\">editorial<\/a> in the January issue, Editor-in-Chief David Schimel, Managing Editor David Baldwin, and Publications Coordinator Anne Marie Whelan commented on changing cultural expectations in the ecological community for availability of data, particularly when results weigh on policy decisions. They defined three areas of concern for data described in <i>Applications<\/i> papers:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<blockquote><p><i style=\"color: #000000\">Replication<\/i>.\u00a0Since many studies and experiments conducted in the field cannot be experimentally replicated (because of, e.g., contingent effects of weather, subsequent unavailability of the study site, or cost), primary data are required to replicate calculations and analyses.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<blockquote><p><i style=\"color: #000000\">Transparency<\/i>.\u00a0Managers or decision makers using published information often require a high degree of transparency to ensure the credibility of their decision and increasingly need to share all relevant information (including data) with all parties.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<blockquote><p><i style=\"color: #000000\">Re-use<\/i>.\u00a0Ecologists tackling problems of large spatial areas or taxonomic generality often build large data sets from multiple studies, by data set synthesis or meta-analysis and often require access to raw data to ensure consistent processing.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p>Read the full text of the editorial <a title=\"full text\" href=\"http:\/\/www.esajournals.org\/doi\/full\/10.1890\/1051-0761-24.1.1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Data may be deposited in ESA\u2019s <i>Ecological Archives,<\/i> free of charge, when submitted for review as a single package with the manuscript. Authors may choose to use other established data repositories after their manuscripts are accepted for publication.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dataone.org\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-9860 img-fluid\" alt=\"DataONE\" src=\"https:\/\/esa.org\/esablog-preprod\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/90\/2014\/02\/dataone-square-twitter-logo.jpg\" width=\"70\" height=\"70\"><\/a>The Data Observation Network for Earth (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dataone.org\/\">DataONE<\/a>) has resources to help investigators apply appropriate <a title=\"DataONE Best Practices: metadata\" href=\"http:\/\/www.dataone.org\/best-practices\">metadata<\/a> and manage data with the expectation of public deposition.
