In 1988, a committee was appointed to address this issue, and ESA still maintains a <a href=\"https:\/\/esa.org\/about\/diversity-in-ecology\/\" target=\"blank\" rel=\"noopener\">section on Diversity in Ecology<\/a> on its primary organizational website.<br>\nThe \u201cWomen and Minorities Committee\u201d became a standing committee of ESA in 1991; it was later renamed the Gender and Minority Affairs Committee. This committee and others, through workshops and surveys, developed a series of initiatives that have helped move ESA toward a membership that \u201creflects the gender and cultural diversity in the general population of the United States of America.\u201d<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/esa.org\/history\/biographies\/ecologist-directory\/early-efforts-to-promote-diversity-1988-1993\/\">Early Efforts to Promote Diversity, 1988-1993<\/a> (including WAMIE I)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/esa.org\/history\/biographies\/ecological-richness-diverse-contributors-of-diverse-contributions\/results-and-followup-to-wamie-i-1996-2016\/\">Results and Followup to WAMIE I, 1996-2016<\/a> (WAMIE II and other efforts)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As a result of WAMIE I, ESA and its Education and Diversity Committee expanded its collection of stories documenting the career paths of ecologists to include more female and minority ecologists.
