We would love to have your help! We\u2019ll be posting bios of women whose contributions are significant but who may, personally, be little known outside the field of ecology, as well as those who are accomplished and well recognized by their peers.<br><strong>We\u2019ve got lots of ideas and we could use your help!<\/strong> If you have a favorite role model, or just want to help out, we welcome you to help compile brief biographies of women who are now working, or have in the past worked, in the ecological sciences.<br>Given the vast, largely unsung, contributions women have made to many fields, including ecology, we think they deserve better. Give us a hand, won\u2019t you? Here are some great suggestions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Last year, Melissa Giresi asked Twitter about the \u201cmost influential female ecologists alive today.\u201d She came up with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.southernfriedscience.com\/?p=16677\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a list of 45<\/a>.<\/li><li>In 1988, ESA past-president Jean Langenheim surveyed 55 female ecologists about their careers, producing her <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jstor.org\/stable\/20167064\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Past President\u2019s Address<\/a> and, in 1996, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jstor.org\/stable\/2097228\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">this followup paper<\/a>.<\/li><li>Does your subject have <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_ecologists\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a Wikipedia entry<\/a>? If so, can you improve it? Many ecologists\u2019 pages on Wikipedia are incomplete. If there\u2019s no page, why not start one?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"well wp-block-paragraph\"><small>While there\u2019s not a strong focus on women in science on the Women\u2019s History Month website Women\u2019s History Month website, they do include a a great Women in Science <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/smithsonian\/sets\/72157614810586267\/\">photo collection from the Smithsonian<\/a> and Library of Congress references on<a href=\"http:\/\/www.loc.gov\/rr\/scitech\/tracer-bullets\/africanwomentb.html\"> African-American women in science<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.loc.gov\/rr\/scitech\/SciRefGuides\/womenminorities.html\">women and minorities in science<\/a>. Unfortunately their<a href=\"http:\/\/www.loc.gov\/rr\/scitech\/SciRefGuides\/womenminorities.html#environmental\"> earth and environmental sciences section<\/a> doesn\u2019t include much about women in ecology.<\/small><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>March will, once again, be Women\u2019s History Month here in the U.S.* We\u2019ll be focusing on the many women who now work, and have worked, in ecological sciences.
