Many of the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/esa.org\/history\/biographies\/ecologist-directory\/\">personal accounts<\/a>\u201d on this website credit SEEDS as an influence in career success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\">\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In slide 24, Dr. Turner highlighted the ways the science of ecology has changed since its early days, as follows:<br><strong>Today\u2019s expectations\u2026<br><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Excellence in science<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Able to ask and answer good questions<\/li><li>Deep knowledge of study system<\/li><li>Proficient in (rapidly changing) quantitative methods<\/li><li>Clear, compelling, impactful writing<\/li><li>Be effective individually and in interdisciplinary teams<\/li><li>Assimilate novel data sources and technologies<\/li><li>Curate and share your data<\/li><li>Communicate well and to varied audiences\n<ul>\n<li>Multiple forms of media<\/li>\n<li>Connect with non-scientists<\/li>\n<li>Advocate for science in the policy arena<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li><li>And\u2026 maintain work-life balanceDr. Turner outlined the roles of ESA and its strategic goals aimed at improving member services and communication. She captured the continued relevance of ESA using quotes from several long-term members:<em>\u201cESA has been a place for me to grow as an ecologist, in research, education and administrative expertise\u2026 to make my work relevant to policy makers\u2026 to make a difference in the discipline and the multicultural diversity of ecologists.\u201d<\/em> \u2014Carmen Cid (30+ yrs)<em>\u201c\u2026with ESA providing a framework of emerging ideas, access to new colleagues, and novel environments to experience, I had grown intellectually and achieved considerable momentum in my career because of it.\u201d<\/em> \u2014Kathy Ewel (40+ yrs)<br><em>\u201cI was graduating\u2026 and my friend gave me a gift of membership to ESA. I have a wide interest in ecology and related fields, so I go to the annual meeting every year\u2026 these meetings are times to get to know other people.\u201d<\/em> \u2014Ed Johnson (40+ yrs)<br><em>\u201cNo other professional organization provides such a big tent for my scientific interests.\u201d<\/em> \u2014John Pastor (30+ yrs)<br><em>\u201cmore than anything, ESA provides a sense of BELONGING. Of belonging to something bigger than myself, a community whose mission and values I share, a community I am proud to be a member of\u2026 and happy to support.\u201d<\/em> \u2014Rick Lindroth (30+ yrs)<br>In conclusion, Dr. Turner encouraged individual members to get\u2014and stay\u2014involved in shaping the organization to \u201csustain ESA\u2019s tradition of excellence.\u201d\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<hr>The gallery below features selected slides from Dr. Turner\u2019s presentation.
