{"id":3873,"date":"2016-08-02T12:59:12","date_gmt":"2016-08-02T12:59:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/esa.org\/ldc\/?page_id=3873"},"modified":"2020-02-05T14:25:26","modified_gmt":"2020-02-05T14:25:26","slug":"2016theme","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/esa.org\/ldc\/pastconferences\/2016-conference\/2016theme\/","title":{"rendered":"2016 Theme"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>3rd Life Discovery \u2013 Doing Science Education Conference<\/h3>\n<p>March 18-19, 2016<br>\nConference Center at the Maritime Institute (CCMIT)<br>\nBaltimore, MD<\/p>\n<h3>Conference Theme<\/h3>\n<h2><em>Creating Connections \u2013 Biology in Action<\/em><\/h2>\n<p>The theme for the 3rd Life Discovery \u2013 Doing Science Conference (LDC) focuses on stimulating approaches to Life Science instruction that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Connect\u00a0learning\u00a0to life science careers in research and practice: <\/strong>What is it like to be a Biologist?<\/li>\n<li><strong>Connect learning to\u00a0current events:\u00a0<\/strong>What is the relevance of Biology?<\/li>\n<li><strong>Connect learning across institutions and settings:\u00a0<\/strong>How do we build bridges across education settings?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3>Thematic Tracks<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Connect\u00a0learning\u00a0to life science careers in research and practice (What is it like to be a Biologist?)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Sessions on this track focus on ideas that help students discover what it is like to be a Biologist. We welcome teaching ideas that help students think like a Biologist and develop those skills that are essential in Biology research and practice. Of particular interest are ideas that help build those core science competencies such as those identified in the <em><a class=\"catalog-title\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nap.edu\/openbook.php?record_id=13165\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">National Research Council\u2019s\u00a0Framework for K-12 Science Education<\/a><\/em>,\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nextgenscience.org\/next-generation-science-standards\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">K-12 Next Generation Science Standards<\/a><\/em> and <em><a href=\"http:\/\/visionandchange.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vision and Change for Undergraduate Biology Education<\/a>. \u00a0<\/em>We strongly encourage proposals that present tested learning modules or projects that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>connect students to the broad range of life science careers<\/li>\n<li>connect students with research \/ scientist mentors through effective local or remote strategies<\/li>\n<li>connect with parents and build their understanding of science<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Connect learning to\u00a0current events (What is the relevance of Biology?)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Sessions on this track emphasize ideas that help students reflect on\u00a0what they are learning and how science is connected to the real world. We welcome presentations on learning modules and projects that\u00a0successfully:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>incorporate the social context in the study of core biology concepts<\/li>\n<li>provide opportunities for exploring applications across the boundaries of\u00a0a rapidly changing biology<\/li>\n<li>demonstrate how biology can respond to\u00a0changes and challenges that threaten or sustain life\u2019s support systems<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Connect learning across institutions and settings (How do we build bridges across education settings?)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Sessions on this track address effective strategies that help educators in both formal and informal settings reinforce biology education at all levels. \u00a0We are interested in\u00a0sustainable and replicable projects that have gone beyond institutional boundaries to\u00a0forge robust educational bridges for teaching and learning. \u00a0We seek creative ideas that connect students, faculty and scientists between:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>high school and higher education institutions<\/li>\n<li>between 2-yr and 4-yr institutions<\/li>\n<li>between formal and informal education settings. Informal settings include nature centers, youth centers, museums etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Proposals should align with the objectives of both the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nextgenscience.org\/three-dimensions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">K12 Next Generation Science Standards<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/visionandchange.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vision and Change for Undergraduate Biology Education<\/a> with an emphasis on the Practice of Science. The practices involve how scientists investigate and build models and theories in the life sciences. We welcome ideas that have proved to help parents understand careers in the life sciences.
