These tours provide an opportunity to understand the facilities mission and focus and see some of Florida\u2019s unique habitats and wildlife. They are limited to 25 visitors and involve a slow and relaxing ride through OSBS in a tour wagon along with stops at unique spots for a short walks to discuss points of interest such as research, habitat management, birding, and local flora. (Be back by 5 pm)<\/p>\n<div class=\"embed-responsive embed-responsive-16by9\" data-video-type=\"youtube\"><iframe class=\"embed-responsive-item\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/MgqZIL5455c?modestbranding=0&amp;rel=0&amp;showinfo=0&amp;iv_load_policy=3&amp;enablejsapi=1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><strong>2.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.floridamuseum.ufl.edu\/florida-vertebrate-fossils\/sites\/mont\/\">Montbrook Fossil Sit<\/a><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.floridamuseum.ufl.edu\/florida-vertebrate-fossils\/sites\/mont\/\">e<\/a> \u2013 late Miocene vertebrate\u00a0fossil\u00a0locality\u00a0in Levy County, FL<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Participants will visit the\u00a0<strong>Montbrook Fossil Site<\/strong>,\u00a0a newly discovered,\u00a0late Miocene (~5 million-year-old)\u00a0vertebrate\u00a0fossil\u00a0locality\u00a0in Levy County, FL, which is believed to preserve an ancient river environment. In the three and a half years the Florida Museum has been working the site, more than 60,000 fossil specimens of over 100 different species have been collected. Most commonly, fossils from animals such as turtles, gomphotheres, fish,\u00a0and alligators are found, but fossils from saber-toothed cats, horses, birds, and rhinoceroses\u00a0have also been collected. (Be back by 5 pm)<\/p>\n<div class=\"embed-responsive embed-responsive-16by9\" data-video-type=\"youtube\"><iframe class=\"embed-responsive-item\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/9GinPJBBb3g?modestbranding=0&amp;rel=0&amp;showinfo=0&amp;iv_load_policy=3&amp;enablejsapi=1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">3. <a href=\"http:\/\/natl.ifas.ufl.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Florida\u2019s Natural Area Teaching Laboratory<\/a> \u2013\u00a0<em>Gainesville, Florida-<\/em>\u00a0<em>BioBlitz<\/em><\/span><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We will explore the flora and fauna at the Natural teaching area behind the Florida Museum through a BioBlitz. Essentially, collect, identify and discuss the relations of the organisms collected. There will be content experts for different biodiversity areas to help with identifications etc. We will also utilize the iNaturalist app. Lastly we will discuss ways to implement this type of activity within teaching curriculums and lesson plans to increase student engagement and understanding of the natural sciences.
