Overview<\/h2>\nOverview<\/h2>\nThe Four-Dimensional Ecology Education (4DEE) Framework endorsed by the Ecological Society of America (ESA) has its roots in 30 years of discussion among ecologists calling for an eco-literacy framework that would outline the key learning outcomes to be included in the undergraduate curriculum.<\/p>\n
To learn more about its genesis: Blog Posted on ESA endorsement of 4DEE, January 14, 2019<\/a> The 6th Life Discovery \u2013 Doing Science Education Conference is pleased to offer the 4DEE Showcase to highlight the framework and to share resources and ideas on ways to incorporate 4DEE into your classroom and curriculum design.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n Keynote Speakers, Ken Klemow and Luanna Prevost<\/a> on Did you miss this session?<\/p>\n Watch Here!<\/a><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n Each day, the 4DEE Showcase presents practical ideas, examples, and tools to create four-dimensional learning experiences that weave together core ecological concepts, ecology practices, human-environment interactions, and cross-cutting themes. All showcase presentations are from 12:30 pm \u2013 1:00 pm EDT daily.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n Speakers: George Middendorf,\u00a0 Howard University,\u00a0 Ken Klemow, Wilkes University, Vikki Rodgers, Babson College<\/em><\/p>\n A meaningful integration of 4DEE multidimensional approaches is facilitated by centering a problem or issue at the intersection (venn) of ecosystem services, socio-ecological systems, and interdisciplinarity. Creating multi-dimensional assessments is critical when developing a multi-dimensional 4DEE curriculum. Participants will be introduced to developing multi-dimensional assessments in line with 4DEE using the 3D-LAP tool.<\/p>\n Watch Here!<\/a><\/p>\n Slides<\/a><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n Speakers: Alan Berkowitz, Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies; Carmen Cid, Eastern Connecticut State University; Kim Bjorgo-Thorne, West Virginia Wesleyan College<\/em><\/p>\n How can 4DEE be used to transform programs \u2013 from stand-alone REU programs to major and non-major course sequences? We showcase three pathways: 1) bringing the four dimensions into non-major and majors courses, 2) using 4-dimensional ecology to redesign the entire biology major across class levels, and 3) engaging summer research students in 4-dimensional learning. We will ask the audience to identify a problem\/issue and then help build it out using this approach.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n October 23, 2020 <\/strong>Assessing Your Assessments for 4DEE<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n Facilitators: <\/em>Luanna Prevost, University of South Florida; <\/em>Amanda Sorensen, Michigan State University; <\/em>Jennifer Doherty, University of Washington<\/em><\/p>\n This will be an interactive assessment design and evaluation workshop. 10 minutes intro, 30 minutes breakout in small groups where participants will work together using the 3D-LAP tool to create a multi-dimensional assessment item, 15 minutes reconvene to discuss group products, final Q&A until the end.<\/p>\n
