A significant portion of eastern Kentucky is part of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Appalachia\">Appalachia<\/a>. Originally a part of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Virginia\">Virginia<\/a>, in 1792 Kentucky became the 15th state to join the Union. <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-1448 pad\" src=\"https:\/\/esa.org\/louisville\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/kentucky.jpg\" alt=\"The official State flag of Kentucky.\" width=\"286\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/esa.org\/louisville\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/kentucky.jpg 420w, https:\/\/esa.org\/louisville\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/kentucky-300x157.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 286px) 100vw, 286px\" \/>Kentucky is the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_U.S._states_and_territories_by_area\"> 37th most extensive<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_U.S._states_and_territories_by_population\"> 26th most populous<\/a> of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_U.S._states\"> 50 United States<\/a>. Kentucky is known as the &#8220;Bluegrass State&#8221;, a nickname based on the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kentucky_bluegrass\"> bluegrass<\/a> found in many of its pastures due to the fertile soil.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Kentucky borders seven states, from the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Midwestern_United_States\"> Midwest<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Southeastern_United_States\"> Southeast<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/West_Virginia\"> West Virginia<\/a> lies to the east, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Virginia\">Virginia<\/a> to the southeast, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tennessee\">Tennessee<\/a> to the south, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Missouri\">Missouri<\/a> to the west, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Illinois\">Illinois<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Indiana\">Indiana<\/a> to the northwest, and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ohio\">Ohio<\/a> to the north and northeast. Only Missouri and Tennessee, both of which border eight states, touch more. Kentucky&#8217;s northern border is formed by the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ohio_River\"> Ohio River<\/a> and its western border by the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mississippi_River\"> Mississippi River<\/a>. However, the official border is based on the courses of the rivers as they existed when Kentucky became a state in 1792.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Kentucky has a non-contiguous part known as <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kentucky_Bend\">Kentucky Bend<\/a>, at the far west corner of the state. <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1454 alignleft pad\" src=\"https:\/\/esa.org\/louisville\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/cavern-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"A cavern stalactite.\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/esa.org\/louisville\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/cavern-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/esa.org\/louisville\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/cavern-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/esa.org\/louisville\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/cavern.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>It exists as an <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Exclave\">exclave<\/a> surrounded completely by <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Missouri\">Missouri<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tennessee\">Tennessee<\/a>, and is included in the boundaries of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fulton_County,_Kentucky\"> Fulton County<\/a>. Road access to this small part of Kentucky on the Mississippi River requires a trip through Tennessee. The epicenter of the powerful <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1811%E2%80%9312_New_Madrid_earthquakes\"> 1811\u201312 New Madrid earthquakes<\/a> was near this area, even causing the river to flow backwards in some places. Though the series of quakes did change the area geologically and affect the small number of inhabitants of the area at the time, the Kentucky Bend was formed because of a surveying error, not the New Madrid earthquake.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">One of the major regions in Kentucky is the Bluegrass Region in central Kentucky, which houses two of its major cities, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Louisville,_Kentucky\"> Louisville<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lexington,_Kentucky\"> Lexington<\/a>. It is a land with diverse environments and abundant resources, including the world&#8217;s longest cave system, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mammoth_Cave_National_Park\"> Mammoth Cave National Park<\/a>, the greatest length of navigable waterways and streams in the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Contiguous_United_States\"> contiguous United States<\/a>, and the two largest man-made lakes east of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mississippi_River\"> Mississippi River<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">After Alaska, Kentucky has more navigable miles of water than any other state in the union. Kentucky is the only U.S. state to have a continuous border of rivers running along three of its sides\u2014the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mississippi_River\"> Mississippi River<\/a> to the west, the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ohio_River\">Ohio River<\/a> to the north, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Big_Sandy_River_(Ohio_River)\"> Big Sandy River<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tug_Fork\">Tug Fork<\/a> to the east. Its major internal rivers include the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kentucky_River\">Kentucky River<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tennessee_River\">Tennessee River<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cumberland_River\"> Cumberland River<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Green_River_(Kentucky)\"> Green River<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Licking_River_(Kentucky)\"> Licking River<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Though it has only three major natural lakes, Kentucky is home to many <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Artificial_lake\">artificial lakes<\/a>. <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-1072 pad\" src=\"https:\/\/esa.org\/louisville\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/rainbow-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Image of a wooded shoreline with a rainbow cast on a blue sky.\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/esa.org\/louisville\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/rainbow-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/esa.org\/louisville\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/rainbow-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/esa.org\/louisville\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/rainbow.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Kentucky has both the largest artificial lake east of the Mississippi in water volume (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lake_Cumberland\">Lake Cumberland<\/a>) and surface area (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kentucky_Lake\">Kentucky Lake<\/a>). Kentucky Lake&#8217;s 2,064 miles (3,322\u00a0km) of shoreline, 160,300 acres (64,900 hectares) of water surface, and 4,008,000 <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Acre-foot\"> acre feet<\/a> (4,944 Gl) of flood storage are the most of any lake in the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tennessee_Valley_Authority\"> TVA<\/a> system.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kentucky#cite_note-30\">[29]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Kentucky&#8217;s 90,000 miles (140,000\u00a0km) of streams provides one of the most expansive and complex stream systems in the nation.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Kentucky has an expansive park system, which includes one national park, two National Recreation areas, two National Historic Parks, two <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States_National_Forest\"> national forests<\/a>, two National Wildlife Refuges, 45 <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/State_park\">state parks<\/a>, 37,896 acres (153\u00a0km<sup>2<\/sup>) of state forest, and 82 Wildlife Management Areas.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Getting to know Kentucky Kentucky is a located in the east south-central region of the United States.
