Program

Welcome mixer
Sunday, August 6, 6:30 pm

Following the Opening Plenary please join us in the Exhibit Hall to kick off the 2006 ESA Annual Meeting in true Memphis style.

While enjoying hors d'oeuvres of local fresh vegetable crudités, cheese displays, fresh fruit, chicken sate with teriyaki sauce, Memphis-style pulled BBQ pork quesadillas, and miniature vegetable egg rolls with plum sauce, you are encouraged to walk around and see the exhibits and displays throughout the hall. There will be cash bars located in the hall featuring soft drinks, mineral waters, beers, and wine. Take advantage of this opportunity to meet old friends, make new friends, and plan your week's activities. Also, Elvis has graciously accepted our invitation to the festivities and will be posing for pictures at the ESA booths in the Exhibit Hall. The price of admission to the Welcome Mixer is included in the registration fee for full-week meeting registrants; event tickets may be purchased for one-day meeting registrants and registered adult and youth guests. Don't miss out on this introduction to the taste of Memphis.

An evening with music and ecology
Tuesday, August 8, 8-10 pm
Musicians: Bring your instruments to ESA this year!

ESA is rolling out two new activities this year to encourage the musicians in the Society to bring their music to the annual meetings. On Tuesday night there will be a musicians' session where any interested musician or group can play for 10-20 minutes. This session will be held from 8-10 pm . Mikes and amps will be provided. Nick Gotelli will make a brief introduction to this new event. Individual performances so far include Alice Boyle, Neo Martinez, and Derek Marley Johnson. Following these folks will be an open jam session.

Every afternoon there will be an assigned space where musicians can meet in an informal setting 5 to 6:30 pm. Armless chairs and proximity to a cash bar will also be provided. Based on the Montreal experience last year, a wide variety of musical styles and instruments will turn up. Please consider bringing your instruments (including voices) and participating in either the musicians' session or the informal afternoon session. Come enjoy some hot music and a cold brew!!

The student mixer
Tuesday, August 8, 7-9:30 pm

The Student Mixer will be held Tuesday, August 8, at the Comfort Inn from 6:30 to 9 PM. Students can enjoy this ideal opportunity to get to know your fellow peers and make lasting friendships. ESA Diversity luncheon: Who’s in the club: diversity in ecology
Thursday, August 10, 11:30 am -1:15 pm

Speaker: Carol Brewer, ESA Vice President for Education and Human Resources, University of Montana

Nearly 20 years ago, the Ecological Society of America took the first in-depth look at the typical member and recognized that, like many professional scientific organizations, women and minorities were significantly underrepresented within the membership. In a more detailed survey in 1992, women and minorities represented fewer than 30% of the members. Furthermore, results from that survey illustrated that women were more likely than men to leave the field of ecology, and that few individuals from ethnic minorities were being recruited into the Society. What is the status today, and should we care about diversity in the field of ecology? Based on the recently completed “Profiles of Ecologists” report, Dr. Brewer will talk about who is in the club of professional ecologists today, and the barriers and opportunities for attracting more women and minorities into the ecological profession.

Blues, brews, and barbeque
Thursday, August 10, 7–9:30 pm

Enjoy a warm Memphis evening and take a trip back in time on the Memphis trolley to Central Station, Hudson Hall. Enter this lovely restored train station and celebrate Memphis with typical southern comfort food, while also ending another wonderful ESA Annual Meeting. The menu will include melt-in-your mouth barbeque on mini corn pancakes; shrimp shooters; tangy sweet coleslaw; southern cheese grits with a selection of toppings; grilled marinated vegetable kabobs; gourmet cheese displays with Tuscan olives, grapes, crustini, Lavosh, and jumbo cashews; steamed Asian dumplings with black Thai rice and ginger plum sauce. For dessert, the crown jewels of the south, peach and blackberry cobbler!!

We are very proud to announce that the Daddy Mack Blues Band will provide the entertainment for this event! As one of the last authentic Memphis blues bands, lead band member Mack Orr learned blues guitar in his forties and the band has become highly respected. Visit the link below and hear a sampling of what you will experience on August 10th at Central Station. The Daddy Mack Blues Band will have you on the dance floor with some good ole Southern blues! www.regmemphis.com/index.cfm?
