Moreover, natural history provides the basis for effective conservation, and, as is increasingly clear, necessary grounding for healthy human individuals and cultures. Because humans evolved to practice natural history\u2013to pay careful attention to the world in which we live\u2013we remain predisposed toward natural history engagement. Applying and Learning Natural History Through Time<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Louise Weber, University of St. Francis: <em>Ecology for a New Generation: An Ecology Course that Teaches Students to be More Whole<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Sam Sharpe, Kansas State University: <em>Other, Neither, Both<\/em><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Special Session<\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><em>Story and the Ecological Imagination<\/em><\/h3>\n<p>One of the most fundamental human commonalities is a need for, and response to, story.\u00a0\u00a0Stories connect us \u2013 to one another and to place.\u00a0 They provoke feelings in us, and prompt us to action.\u00a0 As the foundation of ecology, natural history \u2013\u00a0<em>historia naturalis<\/em>, literally, the story of nature \u2013 is rich with stories that can captivate a wide variety of audiences with ecological themes.\u00a0 Writers will share excerpts from their work, and, with the audience, will reflect on how to tell compelling ecological stories. This is a special session hosted by the <a href=\"https:\/\/naturalhistoryinstitute.org\/\">Natural History Institute<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kingsenglish.com\/\">King\u2019s English Bookshop<\/a>. Drew Lanham<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/nalininadkarni.com\/\">Nalini Nadkarni<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/earth.stanford.edu\/people\/richard-nevle\">Richard Nevle;<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stephentrimble.net\/\">Stephen Trimble<\/a><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Natural History Section Mixer<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Come meet other members, and we will announce the results of officer elections!<\/p>\n<h4>When:<\/h4>\n<p>Thursday, 6 August, 2:00 pm MDT<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">National Biodiversity Championship Competition<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Last year in Louisville, the Natural History Section organized <a href=\"https:\/\/esa.org\/naturalhistory\/2019-national-biodiversity-championship\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the first National Biodiversity Championship<\/a>, in which teams of Annual Meeting attendees and people in the local community competed to document the most species in the areas of Kentucky and Indiana near the meeting site. The goal of the NDC was to link attendees to the biogeographical areas and local community.
