See below for eligibility requirements and some\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/esa.org\/physiological\/awards.html#tips\">tips on effective paper and poster presentation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The winners of all awards will receive a cash prize, and the winners and honorable mentions will also receive a complimentary book of their choice from CRC Press. In addition, we have a travel award for students presenting papers or posters in the field of physiological ecology at the ESA Annual Meeting. Thanks so much to the Billings family who created the Billings Fund in 1998, an annual contribution from an anonymous donor funding numerous travel grants, annual contributions from New Phytologist and LiCor, and book contributions from CRC Press. Billings award is made to the graduate student whose oral presentation at the Annual Meeting of the Ecological Society of America represents a significant advancement in physiological ecology. The award will be given to a student whose paper is judged to offer the rigor, creativity, importance, and presentation that sets a new standard in the discipline. The winner receives a $500 check from the Physiological Ecology section.\u00a0The award recognizes the life-time contributions by its namesakes, Dwight and Shirley Billings, to physiological ecology. Dwight built the foundation for physiological ecology in North America and provided leadership for the field throughout his illustrious career. Together, Dwight and Shirley have shown a deep regard for the interests and training of graduate students in this dynamic component of ecology.<\/p>\n<p><b>Eligibility requirements<\/b>\u00a0for the Billings and New Phytologist Poster awards:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>The student entrant must be first author and presenter for the paper or poster.<\/li>\n<li>\u201cStudent\u201d is defined as undergraduate or graduate student who is currently enrolled in a degree program or who finished his\/her degree within the last 12 months.<\/li>\n<li>The student must be a Physiological Ecology section member at the time of the presentation. The coordination of anthocyanin decline with photosynthetic maturity\u201d co-authored by William K. Smith.<\/li>\n<li>2006:\u00a0<b>Carmody McCalley<\/b>\u00a0of Cornell University for her presentation: \u201cThe role of water, nutrients, and temperature in regulating NO and NH<sub>3<\/sub>\u00a0efflux from Mojave Desert soils\u201d. The honorable mention for the Billings Award is\u00a0<b>Paul Stoy<\/b>\u00a0of Duke University for his presentation: \u201cExplaining the interannual variability of carbon exchange in successional ecosystems\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>2005:\u00a0<b>Laura Scott-Denton<\/b>, from the University of Colorado-Boulder. Her presentation, entitled \u201cSpatially-explicit modeling of soil respiration rate in a high-elevation, subalpine forest,\u201d was co-authored by Russell Monson. Due to the overwhelming preponderance of oral presentations in relation to poster presentations, the judges\u2019 committee and officers of the Physiological Ecology Section decided to give two Honorable Mentions for this year\u2019s Billings Award. They are, in alphabetical order:\n<ul>\n<li><b>Catarina Moura<\/b>, from Duke University, for her presentation entitled \u201cGene expression of loblolly pine exposed to elevated CO<sub>2<\/sub>\u00a0in the field,\u201d co-authored by Ruth Grene (Virginia Tech) and Robert Jackson.<\/li>\n<li><b>Rachel Spicer<\/b>, from Harvard University, for her presentation entitled \u201cSmall scale patterns with large scale implications: the role of programmed cell death in determining the sapwood volume of forest trees,\u201d co-authored by N. Ackerly, coauthors.<\/li>\n<li>2003:\u00a0<b>Katherine McCulloh<\/b>\u00a0of the University of Utah for her talk \u201cThe application of Murray\u2019s law to\u00a0<i>Psilotum nudum<\/i>, an analogue of an ancestral vascular plant\u201d with John Sperry, coauthor. Honorable mention goes to\u00a0<b>Jennifer Funk<\/b>\u00a0of SUNY Stonybrook for her talk \u201cVariation in isoprene emission from\u00a0<i>Quercus rubra<\/i>: sources, causes, and consequences for estimating fluxes\u201d with coauthors Clive G. Jones, Manuel T. Lerdau, Dennis W. Gray, Heather L. Throop, and Laura A. Hyatt.<\/li>\n<li>2002:\u00a0<b>Richard O. Musser<\/b>\u00a0for his talk \u201cA suppression mechanism of induced plant defenses by an insect salivary enzyme\u201d with G. W. Felton, coauthor. Richard\u2019s work was conducted at University of Arkansas, and currently he is at University of Arizona. Honorable mention goes to\u00a0<b>Lisa Anne Moore<\/b>.<\/li>\n<li>2001:\u00a0<b>Amy Miller<\/b>\u00a0of the University of Colorado for her oral presentation: Amy Miller &amp; William Bowman. \u201cNutrient Uptake, Movement, Use. Preferential uptake of N by alpine tundra species: do all species tap the same N pool?\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>2000:\u00a0<b>Brent Helliker<\/b>\u00a0of the University of Utah for his oral presentation: Helliker B. &amp; J R Ehleringer. \u201cWhy is a grass blade like a tree ring? An isotopic model for recording environmental data in grass blades\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>1999:\u00a0<b>Jeanine Cavender-Bares<\/b>\u00a0of Harvard University for her presentation of the paper: Cavender-Bares J, Ackerly D, Baum D, Bazzaz FA. The winner of each grant will receive up to $500 to help support attending the meeting.<\/p>\n<p><b>Eligibility<\/b><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\u201cStudent\u201d is defined as undergraduate or graduate student who is currently enrolled in a degree program or who finished his\/her degree within the last 12 months.<\/li>\n<li>The student must be a Physiological Ecology section member at the time of the presentation. We had 13 applicants, and a panel of five judges selected winners based on (1) the student\u2019s research and on (2) the potential for attending the conference to contribute to the student\u2019s professional development. Five students received $500 each to help offset the cost of attending the ESA meetings; winners were introduced at the Physiological Ecology Section Mixer in Pittsburgh.
