You may want to pick and choose from these statements as appropriate for your audience and topic, or use them as a guide for your presentation.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<pre><strong>General<\/strong><\/pre>\n<ul>\n<li>Many people think only of allergies when they hear the word <em>pollen<\/em>, but pollen plays a vital role in the health of our environment. Pollen, the plant\u2019s male sex cells, must be transferred from the anther to the stigma of the same or another flower for the plant to produce fruit and seed. While some plants are self- or wind-pollinated, the great majority of flowering plants cannot move pollen without help from an animal pollinator.<a href=\"#_edn1\" name=\"_ednref1\">[i]<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Pollinators make up a significant portion of the total diversity of species on this planet. In fact, between 200,000 \u2013 300,000 invertebrate species\u2014such as butterflies, beetles, moths, flies, mosquitoes, and bees\u2014are estimated to serve globally as pollinators<a href=\"#_edn2\" name=\"_ednref2\">[ii]<\/a> <a href=\"#_edn3\" name=\"_ednref3\">[iii]<\/a> as well as around 2,000 vertebrates species, including birds, mammals, and reptiles.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A majority of plants, more than 70 percent of species, depend on insects, birds, bats, and other animals to transport the pollen for<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Worldwide, at least thirty percent of 1500 crop plant species depend on pollination by bees and other insects.<a href=\"#_edn4\" name=\"_ednref4\">[iv]<\/a> <a href=\"#_edn5\" name=\"_ednref5\">[v]<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<pre><strong>Economic Benefits<\/strong><\/pre>\n<ul>\n<li>Pollinators play a significant role in the production of over 150 food crops in the U.S.\u2014among them apples, almonds, blueberries, cranberries, kiwis, melons, pears, plums, and squash.<a href=\"#_edn6\" name=\"_ednref6\">[vi]<\/a> <a href=\"#_edn7\" name=\"_ednref7\">[vii]<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Pollinators are important in the production of an estimated 30 percent of the human diet, fibers, edible oils, medicines created from plants, and others important products around the wor<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In the U.S., the annual benefit of managed honey bees to agriculture was estimated as $14.6 billion in 2000.<a href=\"#_edn8\" name=\"_ednref8\">[viii]<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Native, unmanaged pollinators\u2014primarily bees\u2014 are estimated to contribute $3 billion to the value of crops pollination in the U.S..<a href=\"#_edn9\" name=\"_ednref9\">[ix]<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The southeastern blueberry bee illustrates the economic significance of native pollinator In her few weeks as an adult, a <em>single<\/em> female bee visits about 50,000 blueberry flowers, resulting in over 6,000 marketable blueberries worth about $75.<a href=\"#_edn10\" name=\"_ednref10\">[x]<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Studies in California\u2019s Central Valley have shown that a suite of three dozen or more native bee species provide pollination services on a single farm and can deliver sufficient pollination even for crops with a \u201cheavy\u201d pollination requirement such as watermelon. In watermelon up to 1,000 grains of pollen must be deposited on each flower within only a few hours to get marketable fruit.<a href=\"#_edn11\" name=\"_ednref11\">[xi]<\/a> <a href=\"#_edn12\" name=\"_ednref12\">[xii]<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Bumble bees have long been recognized as important pollinators of crops and native plants. In recent years, they have been reared commercially and used to pollinate greenhouse crops, particularly tomatoes and eggplant.<a href=\"#_edn13\" name=\"_ednref13\">[xiii]<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<pre><strong>Pollinator Declines<\/strong><\/pre>\n<ul>\n<li>The National Research Council report, <em>Status of Pollinators in North America<\/em>, unequivocally states that pollinator declines are occurring. The report identifies the main causes of decline as habitat loss, pesticide use, and, especially in honey bees, diseases. It spotlights the urgency of action to conserve pollinators and their habitat.<a href=\"#_edn14\" name=\"_ednref14\">[xiv]<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Many species of wild pollinators are in decline. Disruptions of localized pollination systems, and declines of certain species of pollinators, have been reported on every continent except Antarctica.<a href=\"#_edn15\" name=\"_ednref15\">[xv]<\/a> <a href=\"#_edn16\" name=\"_ednref16\">[xvi]<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The number of managed honey bee colonies in the U.S. has decreased by more than 50 percent since 1945. Another 50% have been lost since then, half of that during the during the 1990s.<a href=\"#_edn17\" name=\"_ednref17\">[xvii]<\/a> <a href=\"#_edn18\" name=\"_ednref18\">[xviii]<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Many factors are believed to be responsible for what is being called \u201cColony Collapse Disorder\u201d: some combination of pathogens, parasites; environmental stresses, and management stresses are likely to be the cause.<a href=\"#_edn19\" name=\"_ednref19\">[xix]<\/a> Many experts suggest that these declines illustrate the danger of our heavy reliance on a single species for most of our pollination needs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Habitat loss and fragmentation are two of the greatest threats to native pollinator Foraging areas and nesting sites of many pollinating organisms are jeopardized when wild lands are converted to domestic uses such as housing, suburban development, agriculture, or pasture.<a href=\"#_edn20\" name=\"_ednref20\">[xx]<\/a> <a href=\"#_edn21\" name=\"_ednref21\">[xxi]<\/a> <a href=\"#_edn22\" name=\"_ednref22\">[xxii]<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Pesticides also pose a major threat to insect pollinator Changes in the type and timing of pesticide use, avoidance of overspray, better regulation, and organic agricultural methods can reduce pollinator mortality rates.<a href=\"#_edn23\" name=\"_ednref23\">[xxiii]<\/a> <a href=\"#_edn24\" name=\"_ednref24\">[xxiv]<\/a> <a href=\"#_edn25\" name=\"_ednref25\">[xxv]<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The impact of diseases, parasites, and pathogens on pollinator populations is of growing concern. Managed honey bees are affected by parasitic mites, diseases such as foulbrood, and pathogens. Commercially reared bumble bees are also affected by diseases and pathogens, and there is evidence that these can spread from commercial colonies to wild colonies around greenhouses.<a href=\"#_edn26\" name=\"_ednref26\">[xxvi]<\/a> <a href=\"#_edn27\" name=\"_ednref27\">[xxvii]<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Further research is necessary to improve the understanding of pollination dynamics and the consequences of pollinator Specifically, we need to know more about the effects on wild pollinators of pesticides, grazing, logging, and urban sprawl; the significance of diminishing pollinator populations and the potential for cascading extinction; and the identification of economically important plant-pollinator relationships.<a href=\"#_edn28\" name=\"_ednref28\">[xxviii]<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<pre><strong>Sources<\/strong><\/pre>\n<p><a href=\"#_ednref1\" name=\"_edn1\">[i]<\/a> Nabhan, G.P., and S.L.
