During a BioBlitz event, students, scientists, and the general public work together to find and identify as many plants, animals, and other organisms as possible in a short time (read more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalgeographic.org\/encyclopedia\/bioblitz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>BioBlitzes are important because they allow the public to work alongside scientists and, in this process, participants gain skills and explore nature while contributing to scientific research. Of course, the more people participate, the more species are found and identified! It also helps the public learn about local natural spaces by empowering participants to better understand and protect biodiversity.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This year, we\u2019re announcing the 2026 SEEDS National BioBlitz competition where the SEEDS Chapter with the most observations recorded in a 24-hour window during the month of April will win! This year\u2019s NEW rule will allow SEEDS Chapters flexibility to choose their own date (24-hour window) to conduct a local community event during the competition.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-41757 aligncenter img-fluid\" src=\"https:\/\/esa.org\/seeds\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/2025\/12\/2026-SEEDS-National-BioBlitz-Competition-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/esa.org\/seeds\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/2025\/12\/2026-SEEDS-National-BioBlitz-Competition-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/esa.org\/seeds\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/2025\/12\/2026-SEEDS-National-BioBlitz-Competition-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/esa.org\/seeds\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/2025\/12\/2026-SEEDS-National-BioBlitz-Competition-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/esa.org\/seeds\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/2025\/12\/2026-SEEDS-National-BioBlitz-Competition-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/esa.org\/seeds\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/2025\/12\/2026-SEEDS-National-BioBlitz-Competition.jpg 1080w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><br>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>RULES<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Observations must be noted from<span style=\"color: #000000\"><strong> April 1 \u2013 April 30<\/strong>\u00a0only<\/span>!\u00a0 <\/em>(Data collected in previous BioBlitz or iNaturalist projects may\u00a0<strong>not<\/strong>\u00a0be used.)\n<ul>\n<li>Your chapter must select and notify SEEDS Staff on the 24-hour window of your choice. <strong>Email seeds@esa.org to sign up your chapter by March 18.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Only observations made during the time frame count, you\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">cannot<\/span> upload photos taken from before or after your selected 24-hour window in April 2026.<\/li>\n<li>Potted plants especially those such as from gardening centers or for sale centers <strong>should not<\/strong> be considered as part of observations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>The Chapter with the most\u00a0<strong>observations<\/strong>\u00a0will be the winner.<\/li>\n<li>SEEDS Chapters must be \u201cActive In Good Standing\u201d or \u201cActive\u201d status to participate.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>PRIZES<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>All chapters that sign up to participate will receive a <strong>SEEDS BioBlitz swag bag <\/strong>during the Bioblitz Competition.<\/li>\n<li>Additionally, SEEDS will sponsor an <strong>end-of-semester celebration*<\/strong> for the winning Chapter! (*capped at $250)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>How<\/strong><strong>\u00a0to Particip<\/strong><strong>ate in this years\u2019 SEEDS National BioBlitz:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Create an iNaturalist account or login to an existing account on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inaturalist.org\/\">iNaturalist website<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Once logged in go to the \u201cProjects\u201d tab and click on <strong>Start a Project. <\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Choose a <strong>Collection Project<\/strong> and click <strong>Get Started<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\">a. Make sure your <strong>project name<\/strong> includes your Chapter name or institution and the year 2026 (\u201cSEEDS National BioBlitz 2026: <em>your chapter name\/institution\u201d<\/em>)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\">b. Upload a unique <strong>Project Icon\/Banner<\/strong> and create a <strong>project summary<\/strong>. For example: \u201cA BioBlitz focuses on finding and identifying as many species as possible in a given area. We are tapping into our SEEDS Chapter Network across the country to encourage interactions with nature! It is a competitive event \u2013 may the best chapter win.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\">c. <strong>Project Type<\/strong>: select <strong>Collection<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\">d. Under <strong>Observation Requirements:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Leave \u201cInclude Taxa\u201d space blank<\/li>\n<li>Include Users \u2013 Your chapter\/community members that wish to participate<\/li>\n<li>Include Places \u2013 either choose the local area around your institution or choose the entirety of the United States so that all your members can participate<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\">e. <strong>Check<\/strong> the \u201cProject Members Only\u201d box and leave \u201cNone\u201d on the With Annotations box.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\">f.<strong> Data Quality<\/strong>: Select Research Grade, Needs ID, &amp; Casual<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\">g.<strong> Media Type<\/strong>: Select Any<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\">h.<strong> Establishment Means<\/strong>: Select Any<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\">i. <strong>Date Observed<\/strong>: select <strong>Range<\/strong> and in <strong>April <\/strong>as start\/end time of your selected 24-hour window<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\">j.<strong> Trust: <\/strong>Check the \u201cAllow members to trust this project with hidden coordinates\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\">k. <strong>Choose your admins! <\/strong>(SEEDS Leaders &amp; advisors) and add <strong>SEEDSBioBlitz <\/strong>as an admin.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li>Email <strong>seeds@esa.org\u00a0<\/strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">AND<\/span> <strong>suhey@esa.org<\/strong> with your project name to be added to the umbrella project (competition). This might take a day or two. Your email to us is the official \u2018sign up\u2019 for the competition!
