For 23 years, Phillip served as Head of the Ocean Section in the National Science Foundation\u2019s Geosciences Directorate, and the Director of the NSF\u2019s Biological Oceanography Program. Phillip has worked with the ocean science community, and other Federal Agencies, to build national and international ocean and environmental sciences research programs on ocean ecosystems, climate change, harmful algal blooms, ocean acidification, marine biotechnology and sustainability. Phillip is a marine ecologist with his doctorate from the University of California, Irvine; his master\u2019s from the California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo; and his bachelor\u2019s from the University of California, Santa Barbara. He also serves on the board of directors the Association for the Sciences of Limnology and Oceanography (ASLO).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\" style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--60);margin-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--60);margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--60);margin-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--60);padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--50);padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--60);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30)\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Henry Gholz was an esteemed colleague when we worked diligently together for years at the National Science Foundation \u2013 he in Environmental Biology\/Ecosystems and LTER; I in Ocean Sciences\/Biological Oceanography and LTER. My partner, Roberta Marinelli, and I enjoyed a close friendship with Henry and Jan, with far-flung travels, skiing, biking, and music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I\u2019ve been honored and proud to contribute in past years to this great ESA SEEDS program, created by Henry\u2019s family as a legacy to his inspirational efforts to make our field and ESA more welcoming and more diverse.
