About COP16, the UN Biodiversity Conference
The Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) is an international treaty addressing conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity. Adopted at the 1992 UN Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, the CBD covers all ecosystems, species, and genetic resources and aims to develop national strategies to conserve biodiversity and use it sustainably and equitably.
Its governing body, known as the Conference of the Parties (or COP), meets periodically to review progress, set priorities and commit to future plans for biodiversity conservation. The COP’s 16th meeting will be held in Cali, Colombia October 21 – November 1, 2024.
