The Aquatic Ecology Section was established in 1961, following early interest in a Fish and Fisheries committee created in 1917, to encourage research and to sponsor meetings for the communication of results in all phases of aquatic ecology, both freshwater and marine. The Animal Behavior and Sociobiology Section, formed in 1956, was a large (>1000 members) and visible section until 1964, when it merged with a similar Division of the American Society of Zoologists to form the Animal Behavior Society. The Applied Ecology Section is one of the oldest (founded 1971) and most active sections of ESA.
