Calls for Editors-in-Chief
Editors-in-Chief serve a series of terms as the leader of a specific publication. When an Editor-in-Chief steps down, we will put out an open call for applications for a replacement.
There are no open calls for Editors-in-Chief at this time.
Calls for Subject-matter/Associate Editors
Our publications will periodically put out an open call for applications for the Subject-matter/Associate Editor position for a specific journal when more coverage is needed for a specific area of study.
In our efforts to expand and build a broadly representative editorial board, ESA journals actively seek a wide applicant pool that is diverse in geography, nationality, culture, race and ethnicity, gender identity and expression, and areas of expertise. We especially encourage applications from members of groups that have been traditionally underrepresented in academic publishing.
There are no open calls for Subject-matter/Associate Editors at this time.
Calls for Data Editors
There are no open calls for Data Editors at this time.
Editor Roles
The majority of ESA publications are headed by an Editor-in-Chief with one or more Associate Editors-in-Chief or Associate Editors (Subject-matter Editors). See summaries of the editorial board responsibilities below.
Ecology, Ecological Applications, and Ecological Monographs
The Editor-in-Chief assigns each manuscript to a Subject-matter Editor, who selects reviewers and provides the final decision in the system.
Ecosphere
Each manuscript is handled by an Associate Editor-in-Chief, who assigns it to a Subject-matter Editor. The Subject-matter Editor selects reviewers and provides the final decision in the system.
The Bulletin of the Ecological Society of America
Each manuscript is handled by a member of the editorial board, who provides the final decision in the system.
Frontiers in Ecology and the Environment and Earth Stewardship
Each manuscript is handled by a member of the editorial board (Associate Editors), who provides a recommendation in the system. The final decision is made by the Editor-in-Chief.
Reviewer Roles
Manuscripts submitted to ESA journals may be submitted to an external reviewer process. All reviewers remain anonymous unless they wish to make their identity known.
The instructions we provide to reviewers differ slightly by publication. The full instructions can be found below.
