Bylaws

Article 1. NAME. The official name of this Section shall be “The Statistical Ecology Section of the Ecological Society of America.”

Article 2. PURPOSE. The purpose of this Section shall be to encourage research in statistical theory and methodology applied to ecological problems; to sponsor forums for presentation of advances in statistical ecology; and to facilitate communication between the disciplines of statistics and ecology so as to enhance statistical design and analysis in ecological research.

Article 3. ORGANIZATION. The Statistical Ecology Section shall be an official section of the Ecological Society of America and shall be governed by the Bylaws of the Society.

Article 4. MEMBERSHIP. Open to any member of the Ecological Society of America (ESA). Anyone who desires to be a member of the Statistical Ecology Section shall elect to become a member during registration or annual renewal process for the membership of ESA.

Article 5. OFFICERS AND ELECTIONS. The officers of the Section shall be a Chairperson, Vice-Chairperson, and Secretary. Ballots will be distributed by e-mail and casted by replying to the email or other online means (at the discretion of the Section Officers). Candidates shall be nominated for each office by the Executive Committee. Additional names may be placed on the ballot by petition of ten or more members. The slate of nominees and ballots shall be e-mailed to section members during the spring of each year, no later than sixty days before the annual business meeting of the Section. Balloting shall occur until thirty days before the annual business meeting of the Section, and results shall be announced at the annual business meeting. The terms of office shall be two years, with the election of the Vice Chairperson in odd-numbered years and the Secretary in even-numbered years. The Vice-Chairperson after the completion of the term shall become the Chairperson. The official terms of officers shall commence with the close of the annual business meeting and shall continue until their successors assume office.

Article 6. DUTIES OF THE CHAIRPERSON. The Chairperson shall preside at the business meeting of the Section, shall authorize expenditures of Section funds, and shall promote the interests of the Section. The Chairperson shall represent the Section on the Council of the Society, and shall appoint committees as required to promote the interests of the Section. Such committees shall serve until the next annual meeting of the Section and may be reappointed at the discretion of the Chairperson.

Article 7. DUTIES OF THE VICE-CHAIRPERSON. The Vice-Chairperson shall serve as Program Officer of the Section and shall work closely with the Program Officer of the parent Society, Program Officers of other sections, and representatives of other societies of relevant orientation, in developing activities of the Section for professional meetings. The Vice-Chairperson shall assume the duties of the Chairperson whenever that person is unable to act.

Article 8. DUTIES OF THE SECRETARY. The Secretary shall work with the Society Headquarters Office to keep the records of the Section, including current membership and mailing/e-mailing lists. The Secretary shall keep the minutes of the annual Section business meeting and report on the activities of the Section annually in the Bulletin of the Ecological Society of America. The Secretary also serves as Treasurer and is responsible for corresponding with the Society Business Manager concerning expenditures made in connection with official Section business.

Article 9. FINANCES. The necessary expenses of the Section shall be paid from the treasury of the Society, but in no year shall the total expenses of the Section exceed the sum of any amount allotted for this purpose in the annual budget of the Society plus the amount, if any, collected as dues by the Society on behalf of the Section. No officer or member of the Section shall have authority to incur expenses in the name of the Society, except as specified above.

Article 10. EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE. An Executive Committee, consisting of the officers of the Section, may act on behalf of the Section during intervals between annual meetings.

Article 11. MEETINGS. A business meeting of the Section shall be held during the annual meeting of the Society, and the Section members present shall constitute a quorum. Notice of the annual meeting shall be sent to each member of the Section at least sixty days in advance of each annual meeting, but it is understood that publication of a notice of the meeting in the Bulletin of the Ecological Society of America shall constitute adequate notice.

Article 12. AMENDMENTS. These Bylaws may be amended by a two-thirds vote of the attending members at any annual meeting of the Section, provided that notice of the proposed amendment has been supplied by conventional mail or e-mail to members of the Section at least sixty days prior to the annual meeting date.

Article 13. DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION. The Statistical Ecology Section welcomes and encourages the participation of all individuals in accordance with the ESA Diversity Statement. Conducts by officers and members shall abide by the ESA Code of Ethics, which in part serves to promote the inclusion and equitable treatment of all individuals.
