Call for Officer Nominations for the 2025-2026 Annual Cycle!
It’s election time again and we have three positions open for the 2024-2025 cycle: Vice-Chair and Student Liaison. The descriptions of these positions are below. If you are interested in being considered for any of these positions, please email the section chair, Kate Langwig (klangwig@gmail.com) by May 15, 2025. Your email should include your full name, a <300 word description of your qualifications, and any other information that will be useful to voters. This information will appear on the ballot.
DUTIES OF THE VICE-CHAIRPERSON. The Vice-Chairperson shall serve as program officer and shall arrange the scientific program for the annual Section meetings. The Vice-Chairperson shall assume the duties of the Chairperson whenever that person is unable to act. The Vice-Chairperson shall serve for a term of one year after which time the Vice-Chairperson will assume the office of Chairperson and serve in that capacity for one additional year. Following the term as Chairperson, there will be a one-year term as Past-Chairperson.
DUTIES OF THE STUDENT LIAISON. The Student Liaison shall serve a one year term and will be responsible for ensuring that the section is keeping in mind the issues and concerns of graduate students.
Opening in 2026/2027:
CLOSED – DUTIES OF THE SECRETARY-TREASURER. The Secretary-Treasurer shall keep the records of the Section, including current membership and mailing lists. The Secretary-Treasurer shall attend the annual Section business meeting and report on the activities of the Section in the Bulletin of the Ecological Society of America. The Secretary-Treasurer is responsible for corresponding with the Society Business Manager concerning expenditures made in connection with official Section Business. The Secretary-Treasurer may authorize expenditures subject to permission or approval by the Chairperson. The Secretary-Treasurer term of service is two years.
STUDENT AWARD NOMINATIONS DUE JUNE 20, 2025
We are delighted to begin accepting nominations for the outstanding student paper award. All current graduate students and recent Ph.D. recipients (within two years of receiving the Ph.D.) are eligible for this award. This is an excellent opportunity to honor and showcase the scientific contributions of our student members!
Nominations must meet the following requirements:
- The paper must result from research done as a graduate student.
- The paper must be in the area of disease ecology.
- The paper must be published in a peer-reviewed journal between January 2024 and the nomination date.
- The nominee must be the first author of the paper.
- The nominee must be a graduate student or have received their Ph.D. within two years of the nomination deadline.
- The nominee must be a current member of the ESA Disease Ecology section.
Applications will be reviewed by the Awards Committee appointed by the Officers of the Disease Ecology Section. Papers will be judged based on their contribution to the field, including originality, study design, methods and analysis, and impact.
A complete nomination packet should include:
- A copy of the paper
- A current CV of the nominee
- A brief description of the paper’s significance to the field of Disease Ecology (<300 words

The winner will be notified prior to the annual meeting and publicly announced during the Disease Ecology Section Mixer at the ESA Meeting.
