The ESA Black Ecologists Section and the Ecological Society of America would like to celebrate Black History Month and the many contributions of past and present Black ecologists and environmentalists. We are thankful for all the Black scientists who helped advance the field of ecology and related disciplines, which has inspired Black scholars of today. During a time when there are still efforts to erase or undermine the achievements of Black scientists, it is imperative to elevate, commemorate, and celebrate their contributions throughout history, around the world, and into the future.

Why on earth would an ecologist, much less one employed by the Ecological Society of America, say such a thing? Hundreds, perhaps thousands, of papers and books have been devoted to the subject, not to mention numerous meetings and at least one professional society (the Society for Ecological Restoration International, a partner in ESA’s 2002 and 2007 annual meetings.) The phrase “ecological restoration†generates 772,000 hits on Google, the phrase “ecological restoration is impossible†six. So this would appear to be a minority opinion. But perhaps some explication will produce broader agreement than the current three-quarter million to one ratio would imply.
Attention all professors, teachers, teaching assistants, and tutors- the ESA has launched one of the first professional science blogs. The News and Views Blog will feature a series of ecological discussions based upon provocative journal articles and posts by ecologists on current issues or events in ecology.
